Senate votes down attempt to limit debate on Immigration bill (update)
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, June 07, 2007

I wonder if Lindsey Graham will have another melt-down? According to Reuters:
The Senate voted 33-63, falling 27 short of the 60 votes needed in the 100-member chamber to limit debate and advance the major overhaul toward passage. The action followed a series of amendments that upset a delicately balanced compromise hammered out by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House.

The move was a serious blow to the comprehensive effort to overhaul immigration law before President George W. Bush leaves office in January 2009.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said his fellow Republicans needed more time to work on the bill that ties tough border security and workplace enforcement measures to a guest-worker program and a plan to legalize an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants.
The obvious hope of those in favor of this bill was cloture and a vote. It wasn't even close. I guess we'll see how really fragile the coalition of Senators supporting this is.

UPDATE: From Bloomberg, Harry Reid again demonstrates why he should be considered for the "Profiles in Courage" award:
The 33 votes to shut off debate were 27 short of the 60 needed by Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada to bring to a conclusion debate on legislation to grant legal status to 12 million undocumented aliens. He said he would seek another vote later today. If it fails, ``the bill's gone,'' Reid said. ``What else can I do?''

Reid appealed to Bush to twist the arms of Republicans who voted against limiting debate, saying an inability to pass the legislation would produce headlines that the ``president fails again.''

``This is the president's bill. He has worked long and hard,'' Reid said. ``This bill that's on the floor is not a Democratic bill, it is a bill that was worked on by Democrats and Republicans in cooperation with the president.''
I'm no fan of this bill, but I'm even less of a fan of Harry Reid and this is one of the reasons why that is so.

Ummmm, I’m not really sure what your complaint about Reid is here.

Because Reid is basically saying that we don’t need to debate immigration reform, when in fact, we need to...

And a majority of Senators agree that we still need to debate the issue.

Reid should have known that before bringing it up to a vote and wasting time and effort.

Do you think McQ’s compaint regarding Reid stems from Reid’s declaration that "This is the president’s bill." Could it be that Harry "Twelve Million Undocumented Americans" Reid does not have a stated position in the debate? Could it be that Harry "We’ve lost the war in Iraq" Reid can’t stand being on the losing end one more time and is trying desperately to put this off on the President?

Or could it be that Harry Reid is a sniveling turd of a human being and deserves the same respect one would give an egg sucking, brokedick dog?

I’m just saying . . .

A sniveling turd of a human being? When you go over the top like that you mock yourself.

No. Dogs are man’s best friend. Reid is no Dog. He is a politician. They don’t have best friends only best special interests. Egg sucking Dogs should be angry at the comparison.

When you ask of McQ "Ummmm, I’m not really sure what your complaint about Reid is here", I did not respond for him but merely postulated why he could have a problem.

Mocking or not, Harry Reid’s actions have proved his worth - or lack thereof. But I realize I must be careful. Other sniveling turds out there may take offense to being lumped with the old coot.

Lindsy Graham is John McCain’s lickspittle poodle dog, and a pretty weak minded one at that. He does know the "roll over" trick, and has the "bite the hand that feeds you" one down pat.

If its the president’s bill, for once BDS may be a useful disease!

Well, it is the President’s bill.

However, the Democrats have a majority in the Senate, and the majority leader could rush this crap through the Senate before objections could be made. So Mr Reid has some political capital on the line, regardless of his weasel words.

I’d say Bush and Reid lost, and the American people won.
