Breaking: Gen Peter Pace, Chairman of the JCS replaced
Posted by: McQ on Friday, June 08, 2007

At least that's what I'm hearing. From an MSNBC broadcast:
Susan, it is Sharon in the control room. Bringing in breaking news from the Pentagon waiting for Paris to come out. They are saying that Secretary Gates replaced General Peter Pace as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with Mike Mullen.
Wow.

UPDATE: CBS confirms. So does CNN.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Friday he has decided against recommending Marine Gen. Peter Pace for a new term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Instead, he is recommending Adm. Mike Mullen, currently chief of naval operations, to take Pace's job.

Gates said he had originally intended to seek another two-year term for Pace, but concluded that would have resulted in a divisive Senate confirmation focusing on the Iraq war.

"It would be a backward looking and very contentious process," Gates said at a Pentagon news conference.

Pace has been either chairman or vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs for the past six years — a period that covers the Iraq war.

But Gates said that after consulting with senators in both parties, he had concluded that "the focus of his conformation process would have been on the past and not on the future."

Gates said the decision had "nothing to do" with Pace's leadership in the war.
So what will the focus of the confirmation process be with Adm. Mullen? Any guesses?

He’s an admiral it’s the Navy, I assume that the focus of his confirmation will be the quality of the granulated soap in the showers and whether or not the contracts were fairly let....but that’s just my guess.

"Why are we losing the Qar in Iraq?"

I got ten bucks that will be a question, or a variation on that theme...

In fact, I gove good odds that every demoract will as a question along those lines.

Alternatively, "How did the Bush regime trick us into voting for this illegal and immoral war we now find ourselves, losing? And is the quality of the granulated soap up to standard?"

nonsense. the drunken & senile bull walruses of the democrat party, greedily clinging to power in their dotage, will make their way to the cameras, and have their assistants ask the admiral.....

"senators kennedy and byrd want to know what’s up with this ’port’ and ’starboard’ stuff? why can’t you guys just say ’right’ and ’left’? all these new words confuse them!"

Sad to say in the Merchant Marine it IS "left" and "Right"...I would imagine "port" would have left Kennedy disappointed when he realized what it meant for the Fleet, rather than the wine lover....

Or maybe "Why did the navy use DD as it’s designator for destroyers? Are you all obsessed with breasts? it’s SEXIST!"

Actually I would imagine that Ted Kennedy would rather stay away from a hearing that might involve a discussion of safety on the or around the water.

I would also imagine that Kennedy wuld be a little disppointed with the discussion of DD’s in the Navy......

We’re doomed....the current head of Strategic Command will be Mullen’s 2nd-in-command. Great an Air Force General from the left-over of SAC. Nothing good can come of that.

Bah, Air Force, I feared for our nation every second Myers was Chairman....bad enough a Fighter Pilot was President. And that decides it, NO Naval Aviator can accede to the POTUS job!

He wasn’t an AVIATOR...he was a PT boat commander.

Well I’d never slam Kansas state because of Myers, I mean he had to graduate from SOMEWHERE, but I will slam them for their man-handling of my alma mater’s basketball team!

They’ll browbeat him until he admits Bush lied, the surge is a failure, and Iraq is lost.

And they’ll still villify him regardless.

They’ll villify him about any number of random things, and then confirm him with the public message of "we’re not really convinced that he’s good enough, but we’re trying to be bipartisan."

Gates isn’t exactly enamored of the endless war in Iraq and some say nominating Mullen is the beginning of a big house cleaning of the rest of Rummy’s toadies. If so none too soon.

Those who think the next big internecene battle in the Bush Admin is going to be between Rice and Cheney may have it wrong. It might be Gates and Cheney. If that’s the case for the good of the nation the winner had better be Gates.

not to whip on an old dead horse or anything, but the mention of JFK reminds me of an old chatroom debate: was JFK a world-class screwup - on par with teddy - or not? the argument went something like this: top speed of a ww2 japanese destroyer is, say, 25 knots. top speed of a PT boat is, say, *50* knots.

and still somehow PT109 gets t-boned. and that happened **how** again, exactly? was lt. kennedy asleep or drunk? would an air force guy get to write a book making himself out to be a hero if he’d managed to get his F18 rammed by an enemy cargo plane? "it came out of NOwhere, sir!"
