A Tacoma man who claimed he participated in war crimes in Iraq and to have earned a Purple Heart as an Army soldier pleaded guilty in federal court in Seattle on Thursday to making false statements about his military status.
Jesse A. Macbeth, 23, formally of Phoenix, faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he’s sentenced Sept. 21, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Macbeth surfaced in a video by an anti-war group claiming to have been a ranger and have participated in mass killings of Iraqis while deployed there. Blogs, including QandO did a lot of digging and research which finally resulted in Macbeth's real DD 214 surfacing showing that Macbeth had been a 44 day washout in the Army and had never deployed anywhere.
Macbeth had also tried to use a falsified DD 214 to receive veteran's benefits in Washington and it is that for which he is being charged. Interestingly, it was the blog coverage at the time which alterted the VA people in Washington to the fact that Macbeth was a fake and to follow up by filing charges.
