Nifong disbarred
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, June 16, 2007

Well nice try Nifong ... but your resignation didn't avert the official punishment you so richly deserved:
A disciplinary committee says North Carolina prosecutor Mike Nifong will be disbarred for his handling of the Duke University lacrosse rape case.

"This matter has been a fiasco. There's no doubt about it," said committee chairman F. Lane Williamson.

Before the decision was announced, Nifong's lawyer said Nifong believed he should be disbarred.

The disbarment quickly followed a disciplinary committee ruling Saturday that Nifong broke numerous rules of professional conduct during his prosecution of three Duke University athletes falsely accused of rape.
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Now prepare for the lawsuits.

I was about to compose a post with the title "Mike Nifong’s brilliance leads to his disbarment", but it’s probably better that you did it first, McQ. That joke is getting old, and some of our newer readers probably wouldn’t get it.

I was struck by this paragraph in the NYT article on the verdict, though. In discussions on Nifong’s motivations:
F. Lane Williamson, chairman of the ethics panel, responded that “there is no rational explanation sometimes” for unethical or illegal behavior. “I don’t know if we’ll ever know,” he said.
