The U.S. Department of Agriculture distributed $1.1 billion over seven years to the estates or companies of deceased farmers and routinely failed to conduct reviews required to ensure that the payments were properly made, according to a government report.

In a selection of 181 cases from 1999 to 2005, the Government Accountability Office found that officials approved payments without any review 40 percent of the time.

If only this were really 'news'.

Yet there are people who want to turn health care over to the same bureaucracy which routinely fails to do its job properly in a multitude of other areas all the while claiming the same institution will actually "save money" in the health care realm. In terms of funding, health care is to farm payments as the moon is to a marble.

See, when you say "bureaucracy", you should be saying "Bush Administration". But that’s inconvenient.

Just got back from Sicko, so the absurdity is particularly transparent. Run a poll and find out how many Americans rate their greatest concern in today’s healthcare as "excessive government spending". vs. the numbers for "not being able to afford medical care"
