Seeking employment (Updated)
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, July 24, 2007

If you know anyone who needs an ex-professor there's one available:
The University of Colorado's Board of Regents today fired professor Ward Churchill, 2 1/2 years after his comments about the victims of the 9/11 attacks sparked a firestorm.

The regents said Churchill committed academic misconduct. The board convened this morning and spent several hours behind closed doors hearing the charges against Churchill.
He'll be fine. His separation package includes a full year's salary (~$95,000). And no, he wasn't fired for his "little Eichman's" remark. He was fired for academic misconduct.

I wonder if the University of Maine is looking for a new addition. It would seem he might fit in quite well there.

UPDATE [7:10pm ET]: The Rocky Mountain News has now edited the link above to say:
After 2 1/2 years, it's come to this: CU's Board of Regents is now deciding whether to fire Ward Churchill.

Their decision on the professor, who is accused of academic misconduct, is expected to come later this afternoon.
A little eagerness in Denver, perhaps?

UPDATE II [9:08pm ET]: Ok, the article now reflects the original version again. It's official ... he's seeking employment.

Ummm, unless live radio at CU Boulder is on a time advance, the vote hasn’t taken place just yet.

If you want local live commentary, go here (the live feed will be good till 1800hrs MDT)

Time delay, not time advance...

Second, the actual public vote was supposed to occur at 1600hrs MDT - and while everyone is expecting Churchill to get booted, in delaying the actual vote, the board of Regents are acting just like what they are - elected officials.

I’ll admit....

I did have one person in mind here and it was not the crackpot from CO. Grimshaw, you may smote me as you will.

And allow me to be the first...

Shame on you McQ. For whatever grief we give the professor, he’s NEVER came close to this knucklehead.

All I can tell you bains is the link claims he’s already gone.

Uh, that would be "smite" old buddy.

McQ, it’s not like we havent seen reporters writing conclusions to events that have yet to occur. I admit, it’s likely, even almost certain, but the actual vote has not happened as of 1713hrs MDT.

I dunno. Erb is feckless, without decency, and a moron.

But he’s never (I don’t believe) published works under a false name, and then cited them as independent sources in papers.

Or sold "original" artwork copied from art he saw in a book.

Erb is a crappy excuse for a human being, but he’s not Ward Churchill.

Of course, if Churchill hadn’t brought so much attention to himself, his misconduct probably would’ve gone unnoticed.

Undoubtedly. Are you suggesting however, that his academic misconduct should be ignored, as does David Lane, his attorney, just because of that?

Churchill had, seems to me, a modified Gary Hart moment. He would have been just fine calling attention to his scholarship, if he were a scholar, rather than a pompous plaigarizing windbag. He took the heat off of himself on one front by challenging others to find fault with him on another.

Superdoubledumbassery, but, this time, there were more people to take up the challenge than the Monkey Business press corps, and the cracks in the facade gave way.

What is so frightening about this, to me at least, is how dug in the academics are. This clown has the ACLU defending him, but they were never around when I (as a student) got papers back that would have teachers’ comments about my inability to conform to their ideologies, with grades to match. Had a kid in one of my Gov. classes who was so outraged by the blatant bias that, without my knowledge, he took one of my papers to the principal even though he was diametrically opposed to my position. I got a grade bump but the teacher didn’t ever apologize and was (far as I can tell) never reprimanded.

Diversity of ideas and academic freedom, my rump. It only works one way, like Maxwell’s demon.

No. I only find it instructive that he could’ve (should’ve?) avoided the national spotlight and therefore the scrutiny.

I think the same traits which caused him to take such outlandish stands also caused him to think it OK to cheat.

JWG,
I, however, find it scary that such a propagandist regularly flies under the MSM radar. The free speech issue foisted by attornies and fellow travelers is Bu!!sh!t, and they know it. What they are hoping for is a groundswell from felow travelers such that reason is utterly rejected, and the narrative lives on...

What caused HIM to ’cheat’ is what causes Democrats across the country to do so... what causes some to change definitions, twist and turn, lie... etc... attainment of the political goal.

Scott, are you saying that professors who take outlandish stands cheat? That is quite a jump. What about professors that talk allot and never really say anything i.e. such as yourself? Do you say outlandish things in your class (comfortable bubble)? Do you require your students to buy your book for your class (monopoly, collusion)?? Oh I forgot you are a Libertarian. Do you embrace direct dissent of your rhetoric by students (i.e. Free speach)? Do you reward like thinkers with good grades because they agree George Clooney effectively represents American foreign policy in Syriana and punish those with bad grades that think it is just a bad movie?

Erb-san:

I’m going to have to agree with you on this (and it burns, it...burns) There is an alive and well entitlement culture in academia, and to witness it, one need only look at the statements of Chutch’s supporters. Instead of decrying the intellectual dishonesty, they claim that it was only an issue due to right-wing hate merchants. That the man had been previously challenged is a hummingbird blip on their radar.

Would he have eventually been caught, without his grandstanding? Maybe. There is a significant (perhaps overwhelming) number of academics who trust narrative over inquiry, lies over fact and CYA over honesty. T’were this not played out in public, what would the results have been? Yet his soi-disant research has become conventional wisdom.

For the record, I am not convinced that you hold many of the positions you espouse. As an educator, you must feel a responsibilty to adopt contrary positions so that you can Socratically lead your charges out of the Platonic Cave. Sometimes you say things so egregiously boneheaded that I want to condemn you to the hell that is being a teacher, but I do read what you write and hope that insights such as:

I think the same traits which caused him to take such outlandish stands also caused him to think it OK to cheat.

get passed on to your students.

Hell, I’ll even stand you a beer next time you get to my town, if only to figure out if you are teaching or preaching.

I suppose you’d need to ask the Kos kids ’bout that. Have we seen them attack Churchill?

No?

Well, then....

On a blog like this, it would be almost insane for me to espouse positions I do not hold. I’m putting something in the public record — obscure and not easy to find, perhaps, but still public — with my name, a link to my blog, etc. Because I believe most people, including myself, hold positions because of some kind of emotional reaction rather than reason, and use reason to justify what they believe, I try very, very hard to be as self-critical as other-critical. I want myself to crawl out of the cave!

Hell, I’ll even stand you a beer next time you get to my town, if only to figure out if you are teaching or preaching.
What’s the saying: in vino veritas?
