Whack jobs and conspiracy theories don’t only live on the left
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, August 01, 2007

I can honestly tell you I've never listened to Michael Savage, and after listening to this clip, I know I'm much better for it. We smacked Wonkette around for a thoughtless comment about Chief Justice Roberts seizure. Just as stupid and thoughtless is this by Savage. This is moonbattery:
"Am I to believe there's no connection between Charles Schumer on Friday saying he would never appoint, or never, excuse me, approve another Bush appointment to the court, to any court? And then the chief justice suffers a so-called seizure two days later? You're telling me there's no possibility of a conspiracy by the Democrats to have caused this seizure in some manner?" He added: "Tell me it's not possible, and I'll tell you you're a liar."
To quote Bugs Bunny, which is about all this deserves, "What a maroon".

Savage is that that crazy uncle who talks to the trees, and has actual arguments with them...

And loses...

ok, that has to be a bad-taste joke, right? while granted, I don’t go out of my way to read nutty conspiracy theories, insinuating that Democrats have secret seizure squads has to be the craziest thing I’ve seen since I saw a wiccan who (seemingly seriously) claimed that evil Republican witches caused Bush to win in 04, and he knew this because he had detected the evil magic in the air at the polling station.

What bothers me the most about the Wonkettes, Saveges, and Truthers is that free speech is supposed to relegate these people to the fringes of society. Instead, conspiracy theorists seem to be a magnet, amplifier, and breeder to these types of idiots.

I understand that people want to be part of something exclusive and bigger, but what is it that causes nominally rational people to cling to such nonsense simply because of the politics? People who don’t believe in the Moon Landing are laughed at and have no real pull in the world - why not these morons?

I went to see "Transformers" last night and now I have a greater appreciation of this picture.

LOL and again

Life comes at you fast, so you need to have your "BS-filter" on full.

Roberts appears to have had a garden variety seizure.

As has Savage.

Savage is not a stupid man; he’s an entertainer. I think it’s an act.

Stranger things have happened, like the polonium poisoning in the UK.

The problem is, to believe this hypothesis, you have to believe incredible things: An undetectable substance was used. A hit man tried to kill him but failed. A group in partisan politics keeps a secret. The investigation is stonewalled by co-conspirators. The hospital staff are covering it up.

If you’re sane, you realize the risk is not worth the reward. What cases will the Roberts Court actually hear that will cause irreparable damage to the liberal/Democrat/conspirators cause? Are they going to bring back slavery? Disenfranchise blacks? Declare that life begins at conception and outlaw abortion entirely? There is simply no credible reason.

Besides, I think he was zapped by a passing UFO. Tragic, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The latest results show that 35.9% of Americans consider themselves Democrats. .. This month [July], 31.3% of Americans consider themselves Republicans. .. The number not affiliated with either major party jumped a full point to 32.9%. That matches the highest level ever recorded by Rasmussen Reports.

The mad scramble for none of the above

Take a look at a fuller quote and it seems much more like a joke. I guess he should have gone further over the top to make it more obvious.

No, I don’t think you can make the case that it is a joke. If you go to Media Matters site you can hear the clips. This is not a man joking.

This type of rant fits my general impression of how Savage works.

And while he may be engaging in an "act" the sad part is that he has millions and millions of listeners who aren’t tuning in because they think it is political satire.

The only danger the Senator poses to the Chief Justice is if he happens to be standing between Mr. Schumer and an operating television camera.

Maybe Scott, but 8.25 million people tune in to listen to his anti-tree tirades, as well as the immigrant bashing, gay bashing, media bashing, and conspriacy theories, of course. They seem to have you reasonable republicans outnumbered.

Savage is the third most listened to conservative talk radio host after Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, and not far behind Hannity with 10 million listeners on 400 stations.

And this comment is not unusual at all for Savage, if you can bear to listen to him for 30 minutes, I guarantee he will say something at least as wacky as this.

He’s a loon, but a popular loon.

Kind of the Ann Coulter of conservative radio.

You may remember he was fired from MSNCB for telling a gay caller that he should get AIDS and die.

I know a lot of Republicans would distance themselves from this guy, his opinions, and the people who share his opinions, but I wonder if they would ever win an election without them?

I’ll play devil’s advocate.

It is one heck of coincidence since there are no likely Bush remaining Bush appointments. What did prompt Schumer to make the statements he made?

I’ll tender a slightly more plausible senerio. There is more to Roberts’ condition than just random unexplained seizures. And there are rumors floating around to this effect. Schumer may not have been part of dastardly plot, but just privy to inside information. The timing would still be a coincidence but much less of one.

OK, I went to the site and listened to the clip. I admit that my IE voice-stress analyzing polygraph plug-in is on the fritz at the moment, but to me it has exactly the same impact as the written quote.

He tosses the "Shumer’s magical convulsion causing mind-rays" theory out there and compares it to "the lefties" conspiracy theory that Bush and Cheney perpetrated 9/11. If he meant to present this as a viable theory, then why does he compare it to a theory that he obviously feels is absurd? Why does he harp on the idea that "lefties" should consider this in light of their support for the 9-11 conspiracy?

No, it’s not a "joke," he is basically making an argumentative point: "Hey lefties, if your gonna believe these other ridiculous conspiracy theories based solely on the timing of an event and your belief that the conspirators had the motive to cause it, then what is your reason for not believing in this one too?"

Oh, I remember...

He’s just gotten nuttier. Full bore bug-f*ck nuts...
An undetectable substance was used. A hit man tried to kill him but failed.
You know, were I a hitman with an undetectable drug to use in killing, I’m pretty sure I would manage to kill the guy...

Maybe I’m suffering from ’depends on the meaning of is’ itis, but Savage is right that it is POSSIBLE that such a conspiracy existed.

A not-insignificant number on the left hate conservatives with a passion and feel America and the world at large would be better off if we were all dead (okay, maybe not all of us, but certain supposed conservatives, starting with Bush, Cheney, Roberts and Alito). If so, is it truly IMPOSSIBLE some loony group of Democrats is plotting right now about things they could do to, in their view, better America, including causing the Chief Justice to suffer a seizure?

And yes, that is not what Savage was getting at.

Yeah, Savage is more than a little nuts. He’s sort of the Air America of the right.

The Left isn’t sophisticated enough to use polonium or dioxin, or anything tricky like that might give him seizures but not obviously be poisoning. They’d just scream obscenities and shoot him (think Hinckley, but after reading Daily Kos and DU all day).

Remember when they forged those TANG documents in 2004? If they’d just found an old typewriter first, CBS would have stood by the story and they might have swung the election to Kerry.

Scary thought, actually.

Thanks for the referral. Looking forward to hearing about the PRTs on Friday. That sounds interesting.

From this consideration over at Ace of Spades
All you leftists believe in the conspiracy of Bush and Cheney, the conspiracy of 9-11. Am I to believe that there’s no connection between Charles Schumer on Friday saying that he would never appoint, or never, excuse me, approve another Bush appointment to the court, to any court? And then the chief justice suffers a so-called seizure two days later?
The suggestion is that idea of Roberts’ poisoning is holding a mirror up to 9/11 truthers.
