One interesting thing about the whole affair is that at the time he wrote the story he was (and is) a Private; not a Private First Class (E-3), but a Private (E-1). In my seven years of Army service, the only time I encountered a private was in Basic. It is automatic promotion every six months until Specialist (E-4). Unless one seriously screwed up.

And since the "diarist" came in the Army with a Bachelor, he should have been a Specialist. He had to be a scumbag to be busted down to E-1 in the first place. If the TNR knew anything about the military, the editor would not take a story from a Private. Since being a Private means a trouble soldier to begin with.
