Beauchamp Denouement
Posted by: Dale Franks on Monday, August 06, 2007

Michael Goldfarb reports
THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned from a military source close to the investigation that Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp—author of the much-disputed "Shock Troops" article in the New Republic's July 23 issue as well as two previous "Baghdad Diarist" columns—signed a sworn statement admitting that all three articles he published in the New Republic were exaggerations and falsehoods—fabrications containing only "a smidgen of truth," in the words of our source.
Looks like the editors of the New Republic picked the wrong week to take a vacation. I am truly fascinated by what their response will be.

UPDATE [McQ]: I'll be rather interested to hear what Shakespeare's Sister and John Cole think of this development. I can pretty well predict the reaction, but let's just watch it develop true to form, shall we?

Not a big deal, really. Just one more example of liberals making up the facts to fit their narrative and other liberals swallowing it whole.

Professor Erb will, of course, reserve judgment. After all, Mr. Beauchamp may recant one day and otherwise we have only the unreliable military version of events.

He stated emphatically that he would abide by the military investigation? Yes, but he then said...

Well, nevermind. One feels badly further shredding the shabby credibility of the poor man.

So what articles of military law has he violated now - if any? What is this turd facing in terms of punishment?

Is it possible to arrange for him to ship out to the front lines and "accidentally" get his face blown off by an IED, so soldiers in the chow hall can make fun of him?

Let’s establish a watch for the first "He was tortured into signing the statement" accusation from the extreme left-o-sphere.

Hey there, shark;

I’m sure that was heat of the moment sarcasm. That wee bastard has enough to worry about already, and we certainly do not want holier than thou, multiply-named simpletons to take that comment out of context. Personally, I’d like to engage in my avocation of tutelary dentistry, but that is my instictive reaction. I can wait a little while and find out more.

The Army already stated that STB was getting Administrative punishment, so he won’t end up with a Court Martial, I don’t think...

But he’ll be burning the latrines till he goes home.

Well, I’ll wait at least until it’s not just the Weekly Standard’s word on it. Assuming its true, you won’t see me defending the guy. I just hope he is honest in admitting anything he’s done wrong, takes his lumps, and (again, assuming this is true) learns from his mistake.

It’s clear who got all the writing talent in the Shakespeare family.

As for Cole, he posted on here that he thought the whole thing could have been completely fabricated. But that didn’t matter because conservatives were overreacting. (When asked what the proper reaction to a complete fabrication should have been, he said I should prove it was a fabrication first. Here’s your proof, John Cole.)

I was going to comment that we could depend on herbs defense of the individual in question. However, I notice he beat me to it.

Afterthought:

Perhaps it should be noted, here, then our friend Beauchamp has one leg up on a regular here. When backed into a corner, he had the good sense to react accordingly.

Sadly, the antiwar left in this country is so completely disdainful of reality this will barely register with them, and change their behavior not one whit. They’ll just spin it away, and the next time it happens they’ll react exactly the same way, with more attacks on anyone questioning ridiculous stories.

RatherGate. JamilGate. DecapiGate. And now this.

And those are just the ones we could prove. Tip of the iceberg?

Remember how long they stood by Rather? If Bill Burkett had bothered to get an old typewriter, he might have made John Kerry President.

Very first comment on John Cole’s post regarding the subject:
Gold Star for Robot Boy Says:
And, as it certainly seems at this point, he is a fabulist,
No, it certainly seems his superiors got him to say exactly what they wanted.

Most of the MSM is hanging itself out on a limb about the surge—even the ones who admit it’s working say it won’t matter unless there is near total reconciliation at the national level.

Newsflash guys, if the "surge" works well enough, it won’t matter if the parliament and executive aren’t in front of the commerce and security that it yields. That improvement will remain if we do, and the people will not permit chaos after they’ve had a few good months to remind them that, "Why, you can be as safe and prosperous as the Kurds, if you’ll work at it."

Let’s remember that the new Managing Editor of TNR, Franklin Foer, is the degenerate spawn of one of the farthest left “historians” on the fake-history bash-the-USA academicide front. Papa Foer has won many historical prizes for consistently unmaksing the evils in America, especially during the Reconstruction, and still presides at Columbia U., where “left” means “centrist” and “centrists” don’t exist.

Evil Poppa begets evil son who enables evil chronicler. Just connect the dots. No fault on the left, as Mark Rudd told me decades ago when I was a deluded SDS volunteer. He smoked my dope & left me with the advice, "Dare to cheat, dare to win." Could be Columbia U’s motto! At least when CSJ hands out Pulitzers!

Spoken like a man who’s never had crow, previously.

In any event, all this is very nice, and goes directly to what most of us have been talking about for some time.

However, in all honesty, I cannot imagine that it’s going to make a whole bunch of difference to the hardcore leftists, like Erb for example, to whom the truth doesn’t matter very much, anyway. Indeed, their having been at the center of the firestorm they started, will probably raise their value to the far left , by several notches.

Consider the rise to prominence of Joe Wilson, Al Gore, and so on, who, after having been exposed as having their entire schticks based on falsehoods, still became large voices in leftist circles.

Apparently, being willing to lie to spread leftist dogma is seen as a bigger value than the truth.

Jeff Goldstein agrees with me:
”The idea that war turns us into what we are fighting is the “literary” conceit being serviced by Beauchamp’s collection of essays — and in the aggregate, his pieces are, in my reading, intended to supply this practiced layer to the anti-war narrative embraced both by Foer and (if we can believe his other writings, or view his political affiliations as “significant” with respect to his literary output) Beauchamp."
So does Bill Quick:
”None of the MSM challenged Beauchamp’s fantasies when they were first published. And why would they? Scott’s lies fit the the story they want to believe, and tell.”
And also Mark Steyn:
”In essence, they made the same mistakes all over again - falling for pat cinematic vividness, pseudo-novelistic dialogue, all designed to confirm prejudices so ingrained the editors didn’t even recognize they were being pandered to. But this time they did it in war, which is worse.”
The Liberal Narrative is an evil thing, which prevents liberals from correctly perceiving reality, to their detriment and to America’s detriment.

You’ll note that Cole’s entire post is about how he gave himself wiggle room. I’m sure he thinks he’s a big man.

Of course, once again, he ignores the primary motivator behind the milbloggers and righties objection - that a narrative coincident with anti-war/anti-US agenda has once again been fabricated and foisted upon the hopefully gullible nation by a wholly sympathetic MSM outlet. And because Cole is also sympathetic to this POV, he’s doing all he can to obscure this fact.

Comment from a TNR thread.
posted by blackton on 2007-08-02
I would love to reread the original thread and see if anyone there who ravaged the veracity comes forward and admits their mistake. As to myself, I have nothing to apologize for because I didn’t claim to know enough about military life to state it was accurate or not, I wish some of the loudmouths who did come back here.

I guess being a right wing conservative means never having to say you are sorry for anything, ever.

We are coming up on 500 days left of this administration people. Thank God (and for you atheist, thank umm...gravity? for making the earth go around the sun)
*chuckles*

Well, it DOES mean that, actually. When you’re correct, you rarely have to appologize...

Dr. Sanity makes some points about the left in a pretty funny parody of “Casey At The Bat” with Beauchamp as mighty Casey for the left:
"…Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Moonbat land- mighty Beauchamp has struck out."

Not really. Narcissists need lots of attention, and he makes sure he gets it. As the old saying goes, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Didn’t you have a kid in your neighborhood who would intentionally annoy someone, just to get attention?
