Posted by: McQ on Friday, August 17, 2007 I'm not suggesting they're an "enemy" but there what we're seeing is certainly not the actions of an ally, and in today's world, that's how the term 'friend' is used among nations. Why do I continue to say that? Because of actions like this: Vladimir Putin today ordered the Russian air force to resume the cold war practice of long-range flights by strategic bombers.It is one thing to "restore flights by Russian strategic aviation". That would be a prudent step toward maintaining a strategic defense. It is another thing, however, to then be provocative enough with the flights to cause another power to have to scramble its aircraft to track them. This is just another in a series of actions and activities which signal a move away from warmer relations with the west. For instance: In another move with cold war overtones, Russia took the BBC's Russian-language FM broadcasts off the air.Maybe all this will work itself out as a new generation of Russians who never suffered under the Soviet totalitarian yoke move into politics and governance, but as long as hold overs from that totalitarian regime remain in positions of power, you can pretty much bet the farm that their latent (and not so latent) authoritarian side will begin to emerge (pipline shut down, etc). Anyway, beware of the Bear, it still has an inferiority problem and a desire by much of its present "reformed" rulers to again enjoy some of the past glory it had under the old regime. |
