An old quote that applies more than ever
Posted by: Billy Hollis on Wednesday, September 12, 2007

From Mark Twain, one of the smartest Americans who ever lived:

"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it."

Now just try and tell me that doesn't apply to the Petraeus hearings...

Another Twain quote, from his Notebooks, was a perfect fit on 9/11 2001:

A thing long expected takes the form of the unexpected when at last it comes.

I’m not sure what you mean. I thought the Petraeus/Crocker hearing (at least the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the only one I heard) went really well. Some of the questions were grandstanding (Obama’s clearly running for something) but I think overall it was a useful and informative hearing. I have disagreements with the policies, but from what I heard, I think Petraeus and Crocker are probably the right people for their particular jobs, and they seem to be talking straight, with less bravado and optimistic swagger than we got from the Administration in the past.

The senate is either filled with imbeciles or smart people putting on a show for the cameras.

Either way it doesn’t seem to matter to me, they sicken me.

Petraeus is not part of the Administration, Erb.

Erb thinks Petreaus and Crocker are "the right people for their particular jobs"?
I guess we need to find their replacements quickly. I know if Erb argues the same thing as me (which has happened, and recently, too) I go back and check my arguments to see where they went wrong.

Pretty sure he wasn’t implying that (I’ll go out on a limb and suggest he was referring to Mr Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.) Sheesh, I know you guys don’t like Mr. Erb, but seriously, lets not be all DKos about it.

They really didn’t care what room Linda put the guest into .. pretty much the same as the Congressional questioners don’t really care what Petraeus and Crocker are saying.
