I’m just saying...
Posted by: Dale Franks on Friday, October 12, 2007

You've probably heard that the National Enquirer is reporting that John Edwards had an affair with some videographer hired by his political action committee.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Don't care, really. What I do find interesting, however, is who owns the Enquirer.
American Media, the company that owns The National Enquirer and Star, is expected to announce today that it will acquire the Globe Communications Corporation for $100 million in cash, said executives close to the deal. The price is five times Globe Communications' annual cash flow of about $20 million.

American Media is owned by Evercore Capital Partners, which is headed by former Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger C. Altman, who is a close friend of President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, arguably the first family not only of the country, but of the tabloid press. Mr. Altman had no comment about the deal yesterday.
So, the big guy at the Enquirer's parent company has close ties to the Clintons.

Curious, huh.

RedState looked at all the political angles, and made that argument that Clinton has the most to gain from torpedoing Edwards campaign at this moment.

I’m not sure how that really counts as trying to torpedo the Edwards campaign - I mean, sure, they’re slamming him, but its in a tabloid. Everyone has affairs with everyone else in tabloid stories; this doesn’t seem like a very efficient way to attack Edwards to me.

I think this story was planted by the Edwards campaign in order to try and convince Americans that he is not a closeted homosexual.

"Curious, huh."

No, not really. More paranoid, actually.

Perhaps their concern based on some demographic which suggests that the readership of that particular tabloid is overwhelmingly Democratic?

Look, if you believe what the Democrats are selling, you’ll believe anything. But certainly makes you a prime candidate, to be reading the National Enquirer.
