Letter and Limbaugh raise 4.2 million for charity
Posted by: McQ on Friday, October 19, 2007

You remember the Media Matter attempt to make something out o nothing with the Rush Limbauh "phony soldiers" claim. You remember Harry Reid getting all huffy on the floor of the Senate and getting a group of Senators (including 3 presidential candidates) to sign a letter of protest to the president of Clear Channel Broadcasting?

Here's the outcome:
The conservative radio talk-show host turned an inflammatory letter written by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and signed by 41 of his fellow Democrats into a more than $4.2 million gold mine for the kids of Marines and law enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty, all courtesy of eBay.

The Eugene B. Casey foundation Betty Casey coughed up more than $2.1 million to be the sole owner of the letter sent to the radio host's boss demanding that Limbaugh be reprimanded for a "phony soldier" comment he made on air. Limbaugh has pledged to match whatever was paid for the letter.

Limbaugh described Betty Casey, a trustee of the foundation, as a loyal listener to his show.

“She gives significant sums to hospitals, hospices, colleges and private schools,” Limbaugh said during his radio show Friday afternoon, just after the eBay auction ended. “Betty has been a listener to my program since its inception, and we can't thank her enough for her support. This was kind of the last straw for her, what Harry Reid did here.”
The money will go to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation which provides scholarships to the children of those from both the Marine Corps and Law Enforcement who have fallen in the line of duty.

Harry Reid tried to take some credit for the huge sum on the floor of the Senate.

However Limbaugh quashed that as well:
“Harry Reid in a speech on the Senate floor at 12 noon today, a little over an hour ago, attempted to hone in on all this and take some credit for it, claiming that he and I had buried the hatchet, or implying that that had been the case, and then kept using the pronoun "we" in discussing how good this was, the money going to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation,” Limbaugh said on his show.

“Three words, that means, ‘Rush, you win,’” Reid told his colleagues on the Senate floor. “I asked Sen. Reid to match and all the other senators who can afford to do so. I haven't heard from them on that. I asked Sen. Reid to go on the program and discuss his discussion of me as "unpatriotic." He did not accept my offer to do that and now has the audacity to climb aboard this, praising the effort, saying that "he" never knew that it would get this kind of money.
All that sounds wonderful and good and heartwarming, but the bottom line is Limbaugh is paying out 2.1 million of his own bucks to a charity, something I would guess was completely unplanned for this year. I'm sure it won't hurt him to do so, but Reid had to have a little bit of a smile at the way this turned out. If you can't get 'em in the ratings, or win the PR war, get 'em in the wallet - and that's something for which government is the expert.

What Limbaugh should really do is sell copies of it on his Web Site and recoup that money :)

His challenge to Reid and buddies to make a contribution themselves was a nice dig.

Why not, Reid is doing something of that very sort. I’m doubting he’s gonna get much though.

McQ,

I don’t think Harry Reid got Rush in the wallet at all. Rush volunteered to match the winning bid I believe knowing it would fetch a hefty sum (albeit, I doubt he thought it would get over a million.) He certainly didn’t have to do so and in doing so I don’t think it changed the bidding. In the end Rush get’s to look magnanimous; Harry Reid gets to look foolish.

I know that Eric, but I’d guess Limbaugh never expected that sort of a payoff. A couple of hundred thousand, maybe, but not a couple of mil.

Obviously Reid didn’t plan it or have anything to do with the monetary end of it, but as I say, it has to give him a little bit of a smile because I’m sure that’s a bit more than Limbaugh planned to donate to charities this year.

You can download a quality PDF of the 4 page letter from Linbaugh’s website. For free.

The high-end color printer here at work made a lovely copy...

And for Eric, apparently yesterday Rush was asked on air "what if it goes to 20 million?" His reply was along the lines of "I can cover that".

$2,100,100 is very, very little to him. His salary alone is $36 millions a year (as of his last contract). At to that the stuff sold his website, residuals from his books, and money paid for speaking, he’s very well off.

UI doubt Reid is smiling, because the evil conservative publicly challenged him to match the amount as well at the very start. Knowing that Rush has probably already signed the check has to sting, since it’s two conservatives donating 4.2 million, and the total from the 41 liberals is zero.

Where’s your compasion now, Harry?

McQ, did you know that the MC-LEF is a charity Rush has been involved with for some time, donating time and money? The 2.1 is likely to fall withing his usual donation range.

Also, my father an I speculated that Reid’s trying to hone in on the action at noon hurt the final result, since this was between Rush’s fans, Rush, and the MC-LEF. Reid trying to jump probably dirtied the waters a little...

What was not reported were Mr. Reid’s next comment: “Because of my extreme generosity in so magnanimously and generously masterminding this fundraiser, women and minorities will not be hurt hardest™. Thank you madam speaker, and may I also say that no one is more humble than me. No one”™

No mater (sic) what, Democrats are going to make a ton of money for a charity off their political vitriol.
How’s that for spin?

If Reid is smiling at Limbaugh’s possible discomfiture at exceeding his charitable donation budget for the year, I am sure it is more than compensated for by Limbaugh’s knowledge that every additional dollar makes Reid look more like the miserable grasping skinflint he is.

" MR. PRESIDENT, WE DIDN’T HAVE TIME, OR WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN EVERY SENATOR TO SIGN THAT LETTER."

Right. That lying sleaze weasel should slither back into whatever hole in the Nevada desert he came from before the sun comes up.

I wouldn’t be so sure. The man’s a board member of that org, after all. Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, it’s a good thing what he’s doing, and he’s a good man for doing it. But I wonder if a large donation like that wasn’t already in the works for Mr. Limbaugh and Dingy Harry gave him an excellent opportunity to capitalize on something he’d already planned on doing.

I have just received an anonymous e-mail with a link to a site, I Call BS, that purports to have a secret recording of Harry Reid’s Secretary from Friday morning. You can listen to the mp3 and judge for yourself. It seems authentic to me.

Some one should tell Rush.

So you’re telling me that your final point on the whole issue is that Harry Reed pulled one over on Rush because Rush donated $2.1 million to charity? Wow. You might be even more stupid than Harry Reed.

there’s certainly some angle on that from Reid’s thinking. He’s proud to be part of this effort!
Somehow he thinks he’s entitled to ’credit’ for that donation.

Well, of cource he is...

Had he and 40 other democrats in the Senate not been so mind-blowingly retarded, so epicly stupid, then the auction never would have happened, and Rush wouldn’t have donated the money...

As Bruce said in the last podcast "My lord, I have a clever plan..."

"Every cloud has a silver lining"
"It’s an ill wind that blows nobody (any) good".
My personal preference in this case would be to substitute ’fetid’ for ’ill’, but it still blows.
