I don't know if you've been following this story about Air America talk show host Randi Rhodes but it is an interesting peek into the minds of a group of folks who seem to think a lot more of themselves than they probably should. That was never more evident than when substitute host Jon Elliott, covering for an absent Rhodes after she had sent a two sentence email saying she'd been mugged and wouldn't be in that day, went off on this riff:

"Is this an attempt by the right-wing hate machine to silence one of our own?" he asked on the air, according to the Talking Radio blog. "Are we threatening them?"

Wow. Talk about taking the bit and running with it. Of course, as it turns out:

A police source said Rhodes never filed a report and never claimed to be the victim of a mugging.

Rhodes' lawyer Robert Gaulin told the Daily News she was injured in a fall while walking her dog, but she wasn't sure exactly what happened.

Elliot apologized:

"I shouldn't have speculated based on hearsay that Randi Rhodes had been mugged and that it may have been an attack from a right-wing hate machine," the statement said. "I apologize for jumping to conclusions."

But it should come as no surprise to anyone, if you've ever bothered to listen to AA, that Elliot's first bit of speculation involved the network's favorite whipping boy - the "right-wing hate machine". It's hell when reality intrudes on your fantasy, isn't it?

This isn’t a delusion of adequacy, it’s projection.

The reason Jon Elliott thought Rhodes was attacked by a right-wing hate machine in an attempt to silence her is because Elliott wants to silence his political opponents in that way.

Yeah, that was the point of the title - first you have to be well enough known and doing an adequate enough job to be sought out and attacked.

Well, I guess they’re well enough known to have this particular talk radio bombast to merit a blog post. Right up there with Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh.
