Bill Clinton: Designated Excuse Maker
Posted by: McQ on Friday, November 09, 2007

The excuses begin in earnest:
Former President Clinton said Wednesday that all the Democratic presidential candidates could be open to a "swift boat kind of ad" if they try to give quick responses to complicated issues like driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
Seems to me, given the question, the answer was "yes" or "no". But it appears that Bill Clinton is now the designated excuse maker. He also spoke out about the archive records saying Hillary had nothing to do with that. Miraculously, however, they're now going to be released in 2008. And then, of course, there's this:
Former President Bill Clinton said today that his wife shouldn't be held responsible for the collapse of the healthcare reform effort she led in the early 1990s.
Seems like I've heard all of this before. Is anything ever the responsibility or fault of these two?

Hardly a shock. This is the man who asked for clarification on the word "is"...

Oh, missed this one...
Is anything ever the responsibility or fault of these two?
Do we really need to answer that?

A swift boat kind of ad for giving a quick answer? That’s not at all what the swift boat vets were about. Has anyone else noticed the way the Dems are using the term "swift boat" to apply to anything they don’t like?

The original context of the term has already gone down the memory hole and been replaced by the meme. Future university students will be taught that John Kerry was running for President based on his great plan for (fill in the blank), and then the evil wingnuts distracted the voters from (fill in the blank) by trashing Kerry’s heroic military service with shameless lies.

I happen to remember that Presidntial campaign, and what I remember was that the issue of military service was not exactly a non sequitur: Kerry mentioned his service in Vietnam so often that even liberals were laughing about it. I don’t think it too much of an exaggeration to say that the man was running for President based on his war record, and his surrogates were comparing Chimpy’s military record unfavorably to Kerry’s at every opportunity. In this context, Kerry’s opponents were almost forced to address the issue. Unfortunately for Kerry, his "war hero" reputation couldn’t stand up to scrutiny.

Given the level of ad hominem vitriol that has been directed at Bush for seven years, I don’t think that the Left is in any position to declare tough scrutiny of any politician to be out of bounds.

I just mentioned this in the last thread. My impression (and apparently the impression of many, many Americans) is that the Swiftboaters stepped up to question the narrative that Kerry was painting of himself... and rather convincingly. Yes, the history books will indeed rewrite it into a diabolical Rovian plot and the talkingheads will ensure that "swiftboating" is synonymous with lying and I’ll just be that babbling old man who keeps doddering about those brave swiftboaters and McCarthy, too. -stream of consciousness finished-

True but at the end of the day, they got their well-deserved payback on Kerry. There’s something poetic about the fact that the very same people whom Kerry stepped all over to get his career came back late in the game and tackled him at the goal line.
