Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 A few weeks ago I was invited to go to Houston and Corpus Christi by the American Petroleum Institute on a "blogger" event, all expenses paid. Not being one to turn down the few perks which come with blogging I said "OK" and will be leaving tomorrow morning (very early) and back Saturday morning. No blogging in between as it is a very ambitious itinerary (beside the fact that I hate the airport hassle with a computer). I'm getting the opportunity to tour their Blind Faith (the name of the off-shore patch they're drilling) off-shore oil drilling platform before they deploy it. It's a deep water semi-submersible which, according to everything I read, is state-of-the-art. The area off the coast where it will be deployed is the "Mississippi Canyon" and about 190 miles south of New Orleans. It'll be in 7,000 feet of water (they'll drill to 24,000), has the potential of 100 million barrels of oil and lots of NG (its daily yield will be 45,000 bbls of oil and 45 million cu. ft. of gas a day), will be using a new high pressure and high temperature extraction system. I'm taking a cheap little video camera and tape recorder (ok, a digital voice recorder ... boy did I date myself) and hope to produce some video of the event and do some interviews. Should be interesting. What's more interesting is the API's only stipulation concerning this trip: "API has underwritten Bruce McQuain's travel expenses to attend the Chevron location tour in Houston and Corpus Christi, Texas. Bruce is not required to blog about API initiatives. The only requirement as a condition of underwriting these expenses was to include this disclosure of this relationship on his blog."
