Chavez’s preemptive strike
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, December 01, 2007

Mr. Bluster is blustering again. This time he wants to ensure the "vote" on Sunday is safe from prying eyes:
President Hugo Chavez on Friday wrapped up his campaign to push through broad constitutional changes with a broadside attack against adversaries at home and abroad — including a threat to cut off oil exports to the United States.

Chavez told a crowd gathered in the center of Caracas that if the referendum was approved and the result was questioned — "if the 'yes' vote wins on Sunday and the Venezuelan oligarchy, playing the [U.S.] empire's game, comes with their little stories of fraud" — then he would order oil shipments to the United States halted Monday.
There are a couple of reasons the US is Venezuela's biggest oil customer. One is because were close. But secondly there's the dirty little secret that we're one of few countries which can refine his low grade crude. Of course, we know that. The question is, does he? My guess is he does. And that is why his threats are nonsense and mostly for internal consumption. He couldn't afford to cut us off any more than we would want that to happen.

The Orwellian Republic of Venezuela continues to preform to standard.

We would just buy someone else’s crude anyway.

Or, he would just sell it to a third party for a near trivial discount who would then sell it to us. He’ll claim he’s made good on his threat.

Maybe it’s just the excuse he needs to spur his domestic industry into building their own refineries......
