CAIR, Muslims and "Hate Crimes"
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Investors Business Daily reminds us that in the "religious hate crime" business, Muslims rank a distant third, regardless of what CAIR says.
Not only are anti-Islamic hate crimes way down, but they're a fraction of overall religious hate crimes. The overwhelming majority of such crimes target Jews, something CAIR and other Muslim groups don't seem all that concerned about.

In 2006, a whopping 66% of religiously motivated attacks were on Jews, while just 11% targeted Muslims, even though the Jewish and Muslim populations are similar in size. Catholics and Protestants, who together account for 9% of victims, are subject to almost as much abuse as Muslims in this country.

Last year's anti-Islamic hate crimes totaled 156. While just one hate crime is one too many, that's a 68% drop from 2001.
OK, standard disclaimer - one "hate crime" is one too many, but it is also nice to know these stats when you are subjected to the hyperbole that activists groups like CAIR like to use when trying to gin up outrage and sympathy.

Another thing to keep in mind is what they consider a "hate crime". For instance:
But if you peel them back, you find they're mostly victimless crimes. For instance, in its 2006 report released in June, CAIR listed as a "hate crime" the following example: "A copy of the Quran was found in a toilet at the library of Pace University in New York." There are other atrocities, too, such as someone trampling on a "flower bed" at a mosque in Texas.
Last, but certainly not least, it's important to recognize where, in the rankings of "religious hate crimes" in this country, Muslims rank. As usual, Jews, by far, are at the top of the list with 956 reported "hate crimes". "Other" comes in second at 204 and Muslims third at 156. Then Catholics (76) and Protestants (59) - which, if combined as "Christian" come in a close 4th at 135.

So the next time you see CAIR hyperventilating about some "hate crime" put it it proportion, put it in context and look at the details before tripping off into the outrage mode. More likely than not, you will find their outrage the function an organization engaged in trying to justify its existence and keeping the money flowing rather than a "watchdog" organization of any credibility.

So . . . does 9/11 qualify as a hate crime? How ’bout the beltway sniper?

Hmmm. True. It strikes me that the same template applies for the NAACP. Or for that matter a goodly number of orgs claiming to speak for minority groups.

And why wouldn’t CAIR use the tools we so willingly provide them?

And (generalizing Don’s point) how many hate crimes are committed by Muslims? In Europe, they seem to account for many, if not most, of the anti-Semitic incidents; I would not be surprised if that proved true for the US.
