Lakota Sioux "nation" to withdraw from US
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, December 18, 2007

This ought to be interesting:
WHAT: A Historic Event between the Lakota Sioux Indians and the United States Government: Press Conference Announcing Unilateral Withdrawal of Lakota Nation From All U.S. Treaties and Return to Independence.

WHERE: Plymouth Congregational Church 5301 N. Capital Street, NE, Washington DC

WHEN: 11:30am, Wednesday December 19, 2007

WHO: Lakota Freedom Delegation, representatives of Lakota Sioux Indians- an Indigenous First Nation of North America. Delegation includes Lakota activist and actor Russell Means; Oglala Lakota Strong Heart Society leader Duane Martin Sr.; Gary Rowland, Leader Chief Big Foot Riders, Women of Red Nations founder Phyllis Young, Pearl Denet Claw Daniel and others.

SUMMARY: For far too long our people have suffered at the hands of the colonial apartheid system imposed on the Lakota Sioux. Our treaties with the United States government are nothing more than worthless words on worthless paper – repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life.
They're just now figuring out the treaties are worthless?

Their planned action?
We are the freedom loving Lakota from the Sioux Indian reservations of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana who have suffered from cultural and physical genocide in the colonial apartheid system we have been forced to live under. We are in Washington DC to withdraw from the constitutionally mandated treaties to become a free and independent country. We are alerting the Family of Nations we have now reassumed our freedom and independence with the backing of Natural, International, and United States law.
Of course Russell Means (AIM) has been an indian activist most of his life and isn't above a publicity stunt or two (like occupying Alcatraz), as is Duane Martin Sr., Gary Rowland and Phyllis Young.

Now other than publicity, I doubt much will come of this. These sorts have things have been tried in the past and failed. But I have to wonder, given the fact that it is an election year and we're steeped in decades long multicultural voodoo up to our very eyes, if there will be a political ear given this "event" tomorrow by any of our pols.

That's it. That's all ... just wondering. Let's watch and see.

How about we just give them North and South Dakota and call it even.

Keith,

I was thinking more along the lines of Manhattan Island, and as a free gift, they can keep all the people on it for their very own "new nation" starter kit...

Hey, guys, good luck on that. Strange as it may seem, sometimes the smallest of steps can lead to bigger things. If secession becomes more viable, the US gov’t may need to be more responsive to individual state needs (like let me do my (our) own thing).

SShiell,
I thought it was $27.00 for the beads and baubles? Ah, But let’s not quibble over $13.00...

And I forgot to add my two thumbs way up for the "ShadowRun" reference. Game was complicated though, and it made it hard to find players. Books were fun - I may have to head back to 1/2 Price soon...

4th ed is great, btw, and I highly recommend it.

Assuming they start getting some fracking source books out for it...

And you all get bonus points for even knowing the game... I love this place...

Note: Back when Beoing merged, one of the finalists for the new name was "Federated Beoing"...

Hope they’ve got a really big power plant for when the newly-minted foreign country gets taken off the US power grid. I hear it can get pretty nippy in that area this time of year.

Ye gods, Shadowrun. That takes me back. Haven’t played that game in years. Still have the books in my closet, though, shelved right between Rolemaster and Talislanta.

Seriously, I do like the new 4th edition stuff...

But I still buy the OLD stuff because I just love the way the books were writen. The snide "chat room" comments and additions to sections were always really cool in my eyes.

I don’t know anything about the Lakota, but the Utes out here in Utah have a similar problem with life expectancy, poverty, etc. on the reservation. As far as I know they’re not trying to secede. But if they were to secede, one wonders how they’d live without all the Federal benefits they currently enjoy, when they’re barely hanging on as it is.

I wonder, if the Lakota are willing to live as a free people and raise their own people out of the oppressive federal benefits, why they’re not already doing it.

" our ability to maintain our way of life."

If they wish to live the life of nomadic neolithic hunter gatherers they are more than welcome to. I am sure they can earn all the pocket money they need by allowing National Geographic and PBS to film them as they go about their everyday lives; trying to avoid hypothermia by huddling about a buffalo dung fire, curing abcessed teeth with herbs and feathers and chanting, curing appendicitis with herbs and feathers and chanting, curing puerperal fever with herbs and feathers and chanting, ........

I have a relative who works in the medical field near an Indian reservation. He gets a surprising amount of business from those who consume too much firewater and, looking for a warm spot to sleep, imitate speed bumps on the warm asphalt roads.

"one wonders how they’d live without all the Federal benefits they currently enjoy"

Casinos. The white man’s firewater.

I’m originally from South Dakota and for awhile when I worked for a Senator from the state one of my areas was Indian Affairs. The problems are immense; on the Pine Ridge reservation they had unemployment of 95% and alcoholism rates of 90%. They banned alcohol, and people started to buy lysol and puncture the can.

My own view is that a lot of this is because of federal benefits (after being conquered and having their culture destroyed); they were given land that was some of the most worthless, their culture decimated, and then they were made dependent on government handouts. We can’t undo the damage of our imperial conquests, but I think they’d be better off independent and not getting these federal benefits. They’d be responsible for their own future, for rediscovering and reconstructing their culture, and, well, it can’t be worse that what they have now.

The culture thing is
a)gone
b)waaaaay overrated

Anybody else feel the need to drop back to their culture from, say, 1800?

Who do I blame for the loss of my culture & heritage? Oh, right, my stinking ancestors who didn’t think living in hide tents and wandering the plains of Europe were great things so they gave them up and moved on.

One question, will the Lakota be returning their pre-columbian state, or will they be culturing in the time period after they learn to break and ride some of those big-@ss dogs the Spaniards shipped in from Europe?

Just asking.

Did anyone actually play it? I got it entirely for the artwork.

Totally agree with you about the sidebar netrunner byplay in the old books, though. Almost as much fun as the fumble charts in SpaceMaster.

As far as the Lakota (and, for that matter, the other Amerind tribes conquered and herded onto crappy reservation lands) go, while I agree with Erb that they got a raw deal, this noble savage "Begone, white-eyes!" stuff is pure, pointless showboating. Likewise this fetishization of culture. As looker points out, a culture isn’t some static artwork. You can’t preserve them under a bell jar or send some curator in to repaint parts that have gotten moth-eaten. They’re like species — they either adapt and grow or they die. And it’s up to the members of a given culture to do that growing and adapting. If the Lakota want to enjoy some sort of distinct ’Lakota culture,’ they’d better set about coming up with something self-sustaining and rallying their people to put whatever resources they can come up with (including those government handouts) toward it.

Achillea — of course, and getting independence (which I know won’t happen) would be a first step along that process. Africa is another example where political cultures were destroyed, and the result is corruption and instability. Democracies grew slowly as political culture changed in the US and Great Britain, while efforts to simply get a country to move from authoritarianism to a western style democracy is very difficult. Culture matters a lot, it’s probably the most important factor in politics (something Edmund Burke noted long ago).

AHHHHHHHHHHHH - is there no end to your disdain for your own culture?

Some of those pristine cultures were just as corrupt, by western standards, before the colonial powers. Do you think that nepotism and corruption are unique to western civilization or something?

The British style of colonization, working with locals who are more malleable against ones who are not, is evidence that many of the cultures the colonists encountered COULD BE CORRUPTED or already WERE politically corrupt.

There is nothing new under the sun, it has all been played out before, only the technology has changed.

Horse hockey. Nobody is preventing them from recreating their wonderful neolithic culture and wallowing in it. Some of them are already doing it. The parts that don’t involve dying of starvation or warring with other tribes anyway.

And when the native Africans have taken the helm completely what has been the result?

Ever hear of Biafra?
Ever hear of Somalia?
Ever hear of the Congo?
Ever hear of Darfur?
Ever hear of . . . .
And the list goes on and on.

And when you go back and study the history of the land before the White man got there. What do you find? Tribal Warfare throughout the continent. Slavery was rampant long before the white man ever set foot in Africa. And studying the history of the continent you would have discovered atrocities such as:

Ever hear of Biafra?
Ever hear of Somalia?
Ever hear of the Congo?
Ever hear of Darfur?
Ever hear of . . . .

More relativisim for the Professor.
You can bet there are parts of their cultures they won’t reclaim however.
Take for example, the Native American tribe called the Aztecs. A lovely people, fond of chocolate, highly organized, with an excellent grasp of the celestial calendar and mathematics, who celebrated various holidays and festivals by cutting out the hearts of their sacrificial victims.

Whups....in this cultural restoration thing, we’ll only be using the parts of the culture we like, mostly, right?
Same for those cultures we’re lamenting being destroyed by evil white Europeans, we’re only lamenting the loss of the good sh!t, right? And of course
everyone will agree what the good sh!t was, and what the bad sh!t was, right?
Like the differences in the roles of the sexes, and who’s in charge, and how we decide that, right?

Wow, it’ll be like, a camping trip that never ends, but only the good parts of camping, right? Not the rainy, windy, parasitic, dirty, muddy, hot, cold, cutting wood with stone tools, hunting with flint arrows and hoping the previous group of cultural heroes haven’t stripped the berry plants and taken all the nuts before we got there parts.
Only the cool sunny mornings when I step out of my lodge and see the cool parts of nature just like in Dances with Wolves, right?

Clearly the problems in Africa are results of colonialism. That’s what happens when you destroy a developing political culture, exploit it, mix together different ethnic groups, impose outside political organizations with borders determined to suit the need of outside powers. African suffering would not exist had it not been for colonialism.

SDN: Nah, I’ll use the fruits of our conquest to try to combat the mentality that led to conquest — change this place from within!

timactual: they won’t "reclaim" a culture, but simply develop on their own. Their culture now is dependence on government. That is the problem. I’d think at least that is something most libertarians could agree upon. Give them responsibility, stop the dependency on government, and let them construct their own way of doing things.

Looker, who said corruption is a uniquely western thing? When you destroy and exploit a culture, impose foreign political structures, and then create fake borders that split some ethnic groups and mix together numerous ones in a "state," that sets the stage for corruption and ethnic conflict to take root.

Fact is, things worked reasonably well on their own terms in Africa and North America before the invaders came in and destroyed. That evil can’t be undone, but we can try to at least realize the reality of the situation. And it’s funny how you brand me a moral relativist for essentially following the thinking of the great conservative philosopher, Edmund Burke. My argument isn’t leftist, it’s actually conservative here.

"I’d think at least that is something most libertarians could agree upon"

I really wouldn’t know, not being a libertarian myself.

"Give them responsibility,"

They have responsibility.

"Fact is, things worked reasonably well on their own terms in Africa and North America before the invaders came in and destroyed."

And we know that because of the extensive written documentation stored in libraries and archives by the indigenous folks. I know better than to ask that you back up your claims, so I will just say that is your unsupported opinion.

Ummm...last time I looked, the various Dakota/Lakota tribes all had democratically elected tribal leaders.
None of them are on this list, only professional left wing activists, some of whom founded their own organizations so they could claim they were "leaders".
Who exactly do they claim to respresent?

As a registered American Indian/Native American or whatever they are referring us as, Russell Means needs to wake up. If he doesn’t know it, the Federal Government seceded them from the United States when they passed Federal Legislation PL-92-638 in the mid 1970’s. This Legislation referred to as "The Indians Self Determination Act", places Recognized Reservations/Indians in the same category, loosley speaking, as a Territory of the United States. Their sovereign immunity status even passes State Governments Jurisdiction.

Secondly, Mr. Means needs to move quick, because the United States of American is fast becoming a Territory of the UN.

Uncivilized and proud of it.
