The culture of the celebrity media
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, December 29, 2007

You know I've been peripherally following the "Jamie Lynn Spears" kerfuffle over the last few weeks. Nickelodian has been rethinking her show. Experts have been saying that her situation provides a 'teachable moment' for young teen girls who idolize her.

Really? How teachable is this:
Not long after the news on Jamie-Lynn Spears’ pregnancy came out, OK! magazine reportedly agreed to a $1 million dollar deal for exclusive pictures of the Spears baby. The OK! magazine, which already had exclusive access to Britney’s little sister’s story, reportedly convinced Jamie Lynn to pose for them after her mom, Lynne, kept in touch with them following the interview.

According to, a family insider said “Jamie’s mom Lynne contacted OK! Personally after they ran the story on Britney’s meltdown while posing for a photo shoot with them. She thanked them for handling it so well and stayed in touch with the magazine.”

According to the same source, mom and daughter did not want the money for the photo shoot, but OK! Magazine agreed to pay up to $1 million when the child is born. The approximate date for the photo shoot is hard to tell, but TMZ says miss Spears could be further along than the 12 weeks she announced, and we might even expect a “spring baby”.
Nothing like mommy arranging a million dollar photo shoot to assuage that guilt and turn teen pregnancy lemons into lemonade.

"Mom and daughter did not want the money for the photo shoot". But OK! decided to throw a million bucks at them anyway.

Whatta laugh.

Unfortunately, those who will now 'learn' from this 'teachable moment' will learn exactly the opposite of what the "experts" are pushing. Glitz, greed and shamelessness overcome common sense - again. And, naturally, our celebrity media aids and abets it (and, unfortunately, there's an obvious market for it).

Stay tuned for a future expose from these very same folks telling us about how glitz and greed are ruining our culture. It's alway nice when you can set up your own stories.

This ’teaching moment’ was also embraced by the TV execs of Nickelodeon to cash in themselves and create a special about ’Sex & Love’. Spears’ show is still on the air, probably hoping for a ratings boost from the controversy.

To add to the whole white-trashness of the situation the baby isn’t even suppose to be her boyfriend’s, but rumored to be an older man’s, possibly a TV exec.
