Michigan Prediction
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Take this with a grain of salt (my predictions to this point on the Republican side have sucked) but I think Romney by a hair (he'd doing a better job of pandering to the auto industry).

The action tonight will be in a scheduled Democratic debate. Unfortunately I'll be traveling, so I'll miss it. Or maybe that's "fortunately". Hmmm.

The gas tax disguised as an anti-global warming tax disguised as an energy bill the Democrats passed will cost auto industry jobs for sure. I will tell you support for Democrats didn’t flinch a bit here in michigan.

The crossover democrats probably weren’t phased by McCain’s "Those jobs are gone, sucks to be you." remark. (OK its more of a minor paraphrase and I mean minor).

If anything McCain’s remark shows a serious disconnect with the real situation here in Michigan.

Firstly the job loss in the late 70’s and early 80’s was to market penetration from foreign competitors and changes in technology. That’s not what Romney is referring to. There’s been a wave of jobloss in Michigan over the past 6 years that may in part be those issue. But mostly comes from other sources.

For one, customer paralysis over new car purchases. It started with 9/11, recovered slightly and sunk again with the Iraq War/Steadily increasing gas prices. Washington could do more (a six year old child could too) to calm consumer fears for starters.

For another is the customer switch away Trucks/SUVs due to gas prices. These are far more profitable since foreign competition can’t penetrate this market very effectively. Something washington isn’t helping with a heaping load of gas taxes with this last bill which just got 40 cents bigger per gallon if the article I caught on autobloggreen is correct.

So Sen. McCain, those jobs are gone because media whores like you are pandering to an artificial crisis.

Anyway, I expect the crossover Democrats to pull this out for McCain.
