An Obama activist confronts the reality of the Clinton machine (update)
Posted by: McQ on Monday, January 21, 2008

And he is appalled - from a Kos diary:
After being a part of this campaign, doing this work, and seeing this level of viciousness from a supposedly Democratic candidate, it will be a cold day in hell before I do any work for anyone in any way associated with Hillary Clinton. At this point, even my general election vote is in question. I am furious almost to the point of nausea. There are so many young, idealistic activists here who are absolutely crushed—not because we lost here, but because of the way we "lost." Disillusionment is running extremely high—and I doubt very much of many of them will be back in 2008, or ever again. Illegal and immoral campaign tactics like this aren't just reprehensible: they also come at a cost to the party in the long run.
Young, idealistic activists often are "crushed" in hardball politics. Why this one thought a thoroughly ruthless campaign such as the Clinton campaign would spare him because he's a Democrat speaks to 'young' and 'idealist' I guess, but certainly isn't news as it pertains to the Clinton campaign.
Leaving behind the triangulating, DLC politics of the Clintons, this crap leaves me with just one question: with Democrats like these, who needs Republicans?
Apparently that's what most Republicans think as well, given the quagmire (yes, I've been looking for an opportunity to use the word legitimately) the Republican primaries are in.

UPDATE: Obama's campaign discusses the reports of irregularities:
US Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign on Sunday said that it had received reports of voting irregularities in Nevada's nominating caucuses, which were won by rival Hillary Clinton.

Spokesmen for Obama's campaign told reporters that a Clinton party handout urged registration lines for the caucuses Saturday to close at 11:30 am, whereas state party rules said anyone in line until 12:00 pm was to be allowed to participate.

"Despite clear rules and timelines laid out by the Nevada Democratic Party that caucus doors should remain open and voter registration should continue until noon, the Clinton campaign encouraged their operatives to close the caucus doors at 11:30 am, a half hour before that deadline," said spokesman Bill Burton.

"This caused confusion and led to people leaving the caucuses before having the chance to participate."
I'm just aghast that the Clinton campaign might have stooped to dirty politics (*cough, cough*).

One more reason to be grateful that Obama is in this campaign. He is drawing the Clintons into the light and "young idealists" (as well as battle-hardened veterans) are seeing the Clintons for what they truly are: RUTHLESS beyond all reason. I always like to think of the Clintons as "Kaiser Soze meets Lady MacBeth"

Ye gods, would you just look at all the idealistic naivete. As if being of the Democratic party automatically confers some higher purpose, greater compassion... Ugh, I just threw up a little in my mouth there.

" There are so many young, idealistic activists here who are absolutely crushed"

Such disappointment and disillusion is pretty much normal when young people come in contact with the real world for the first time. After awhile, though, say when people get into their late twenties or early thirties, listening to their sad tales of crushed spirits and shocked sensibilities and how they will never ever get involved with the loathsome Democratic/Republican party again gets a little tiresome. Welcome to reality. Deal with it.

And to think they managed this while taking time off from college and working for free...

Most of us have to work a 40-hour week before our idealism is crushed...

"If you’re under 30 and not a liberal, you got no heart.
If you’re over 30 and not a conservative, you got no brain."

...never been more true. Poor little lamb...

The key: pragmatic idealism. Never give into the idea it’s a cold cruel world, so you have to be cruel and cold yourself. Never give into the notion that because the world changes slowly, it can’t change. Never allow the failure of quick realization of ideals lead one to cynicism. Recognize that it’s possible to hold and act on those ideals even if one doesn’t see direct results. Cultures change slowly, but they do change. And who knows — maybe the Clinton machines cynical tactics will backfire. Perhaps she’ll manage to crush Obama, but lose to McCain (or whoever) and set up Obama or someone else with a different kind of approach in the future. Ya gotta have faith that doing good means something, even if it appears that the cold, cynical types are succeeding.

Obama may turn out to have a machine as unsavory as the Clintons. Chicago isn’t exactly the land of shrinking violet politics.

Martin, you say that like Obama ever had to actually fight to win a seat.

Local politics are like pillow fights in Chicago. Was it even contested?

And his run for US Senate couldn’t have been more of a gimme if we’d put a baby-rapist against him.

Obama did have a legit opponent in the Senate contest — that guy Ryan — until his deck got swabbed. And then Alan Keyes stepped in. Have I got that right?

But I’ve forgotten the details of how that came down on Ryan.

That aside, Obama belongs to what is essentially a racist Afrocentrist church. But in the current paradigm — at least according to liberals — blacks cannot be racists.

Obama joined that church roughly 17 years ago, as an adult. He was married there shortly thereafter, and is certainly aware of the Afrocentrist program. But you haven’t seen that much about it, yet, in the media. Just hints here and there. That’s because Obama is still largely the business of the Democrats, and they don’t, or can’t, vet their candidates.

As to how much of an edge Obama’s machine might have, the pastor of his church is close with Farrakhan, and seems to be strengthening that connection. Can the pastor possibly be unaware of the political implications/dangers for Obama? Or is Obama, via the church, quite deliberately opening up a backchannel with the Nation of Islam? Obama has disavowed — with very mild language and no fanfare — the award that his church recently bestowed on Farrakhan.

What I’m suggesting is that NoI will do stuff for Obama, perhaps even in the belief that his Muslim background (though it’s not an NoI background) makes him a cousin, and that his Afrocentrist church, though Christian, stands in solidarity with the NoI.

NoI and Farrakhan must see this as the best opportunity to gain influence in American power politics and culture that they’ve ever had. And Obama strikes me as a guy who is hiding most of what he really believes.

Obama is trying to jump the Clintons. It would make sense to have street muscle when you try something like that, though I don’t think that the Clintons will be daunted by it. I think they have the purer sense of thuggery.

You got it right, Martin.

Like I said, Ryan pulled out, and so what real right did Obama put up to actually win?

And when I get images of Obama trying to jump the Clintons, the only music I hear is Michael jackson’s "Bad". It’s just as rediculous.

I think you’re both missing and making my point.

The fight might well have consisted of knocking Ryan out of the race. I don’t know the details, but it strikes me that getting rid of your only legit opponent before the election is Chicago-style politics. You don’t take any risks.

Now, I don’t know whose fingerprints were on that operation. Ryan accomodated by cooking his own goose in advance. But, on the other hand, why didn’t Obama’s strange church put him out of the race?

That’s a real question.

Nah. The same paper that ran the story of domestic abuse to knock out the democrat he ran against in the primaries was the same one to break the story about Ryan (And frankly, I don’t blame the guy - if I was married to Jeri, I’d want public sex too if only to prove I was doing Jeri).

I don’t think Obama’s people actually had anything to do with it.

And his church didn’t put him out of the race because this is Illinois, and he’s a democrat from chicago. He likely could have raped a woman DURING a debate with Keyes and still won.

God I hate this state...

So I suppose he’s STILL actually more battle hardened in elections than Hillary, who’s main opponent in her senate elections was boredom.

I’d forgotten that was what killed Ryan’s campaign and put Obama on the national scene.

For what its worth, Jeri Ryan is still very much a conservative, and was a vocal supporter of her ex-husband’s bid, even after the story broke. She wasn’t the one who leaked the story...

She’s still one of the good ones.
