The Clintons: The left’s newly discovered disdain for them
Posted by: McQ on Saturday, January 26, 2008

Jonathan Chait asks, "is the right right about the Clintons"?

The answer, of course, is "yes" along with a hearty "welcome to the club, what took you so long" appended along with a chuckle and a head-shake.
Something strange happened the other day. All these different people — friends, co-workers, relatives, people on a liberal e-mail list I read — kept saying the same thing: They've suddenly developed a disdain for Bill and Hillary Clinton. Maybe this is just a coincidence, but I think we've reached an irrevocable turning point in liberal opinion of the Clintons.

The sentiment seems to be concentrated among Barack Obama supporters. Going into the campaign, most of us liked Hillary Clinton just fine, but the fact that tens of millions of Americans are seized with irrational loathing for her suggested that she might not be a good Democratic nominee. But now that loathing seems a lot less irrational. We're not frothing Clinton haters like ... well, name pretty much any conservative. We just really wish they'd go away.
Uh, so do most of us ... and they can take the Bushs with them.

I have a feeling the meme of "We don’t need another president named Bush or Clinton" has not yet reached its peak.

The first thing that they have to know is that when they see the Clintons for what they really are they are seeing themselves for what they really are.

And the next thing that they have to know is that it never was "just about sex."

I knew what the Clintons were the first time I saw James Carville acting as their spokesman in 1992. No one with any sense of human proportion would put an aberrational disfigured thing like that out as their representative.

But just to be fair to the Clintons, Barack Obama is really one of their children and they’re welcome to discipline him for out-phonying them to their heart’s content.

I can’t say much for the Republican Party. It’s confused and troubled right now, but anyone who would want the Democrats in charge of this country should understand that they are in a huge hurry to destroy it, under the guise of the usual good intentions.

That’s one of the reasons the Clintons must make sure that there are no acceptable alternatives. There are many, many millions of voters who will listen to what Bill Clinton says, who have never heard of Jonathan Chait or any of his fellow pundits. And John Kerry has a tenth of the inluence among Democrats as Bill Clinton has.

It is a cult of personality, not a matter of rational leadership.

Hillary will win the nomination regardless.

Hillary will win the nomination regardless.
And Obama will be left bloodied and broken by the side of the road. The Clintons will take Harold Ford Jr. for VP running mate, all will be well with blacks, and those who opened their mouths this week to criticize the Clintons will shut up, lest they join Obama.

My theory is that the Clintons don’t want Obama even being seen as the future of the Democratic Party. He has crossed them (by both challenging them in the first place and then fighting back when they sought to put him down), and so they will allow him no future. He’ll be positioned as a senator like Kerry or Dodd. His press coverage will treat him as a once was.

The only thing that has surprised me about any of this is that Bill Clinton himself has handled the wet work. I didn’t think he would do that himself.

I dunno, maybe Ford is smart enough not to get sucked in. And I’m not so sure Obama loses that much by losing to the Clintons. If Hillary is elected, by 2012 the whole country may really be ready for ’change’.

Anyway, I don’t see Obama backing down now, and a bloody fight all the way to the convention isn’t really going to do Hillary any good among that black vote that amounts to 20% or so of the Dem total. After all, Kerry got around 90% of the 11% of the total vote that was cast by black voters. That’s pretty much 20% of the total Kerry got, and I don’t really see Hillary getting any more out of that bucket. If half of them get disgusted and stay home, she’s in trouble against any reasonable alternative (i.e. not Huckabee or Ron Paul).

Ford is smart, but not as smart as he is ambitious. Plus, he was supposed to be the great black hope, but then lost his race for the Senate. The trade he makes with the Clintons puts him back in position to become the first black president and puts the Clintons back in the good graces of blacks.
Anyway, I don’t see Obama backing down now,
Neither do I, which is why I think the Clintons will turn up the heat after South Carolina. But Bill Clinton might back off while Clinton assistants in the media push the story about Obama’s church. That will reinforce the "whites vote for whites, especially when the black candidate is a black supremacist" line.

Again, that’s where Harold Ford Jr. comes in, to salve the wound of Obama’s destruction.

It’s not that the left has discovered a disdain for the Clintons per se, it is that the left has always hated those who stand in their way, and the Clintons just happen to be the ones standing in the way of liberals getting what they want (Obama nominated). In the 90s, the left defended Clinton and went after the right, not because they approved of the specifics of what Clinton did, but because they couldn’t/wouldn’t admit conservatives were right about anything.

Now the Clintons are seen as an obstacle to the left getting Obama (who is a double win for the left; he’s more liberal than either Clinton and liberal street cred is higher for supporting a black than supporting a woman), so the Clintons are getting trashed... but not for the specifics of what they’re doing, but rather because of whom they’re doing it to (the left would have (and has had) no problem with Clinton pulling stunts on the GOP).

I’m no fan of Hillary, but at least we know her, warts and all, and trust her to some degree of competence, however self-involved. Obama has the thinnest resume for a serious presidential candidate since William Jennings Bryan, and his quasi-racist church makes me nervous indeed. At the very least, Obama should have better judgment than to ally himself to a group that gives a lifetime achievement award to Louis Farrakhan as a consistent statement of its black power roots.

As far as I’m concerned, Hillary will be doing America a favor by knocking Obama out of contention. If it’s mutual destruction, all the better.

"we ....... trust her to some degree of competence"

Not me. She failed to destroy those incriminating billing documents, didn’t cover her tracks on the $100,000 commodity thing, failed to find a good fall guy for the health care fiasco, etc. Her judgement in choosing accomplices is not good, either. We need first class crooks to run a country as large as this, not second rate small town grifters. How on earth will she deal with the Russian kleptocrats, the Chinese thugs, and other world leaders if her idea of a good White House ’security’ capo is a minor league nightclub bouncer?

Yeah. We really need the trains to run on time.

As for the concpet of her having more ’experience’, I note with some interest that none... mark this... NONE of the Democrats have an executive experience. Either claiming superior experience over the other is laughable thereby. (Indeed, Romeny, by that measure is the only qualified of the lot of them, from either party)

Hillary Clinton’s claim to fame is she was the the willing abused wife of Bill Clinton, and knows where the White House Silverware and China were kept 8 years ago, before the place got deloused.
