Obama: Republicans will love this
Posted by: McQ on Monday, January 28, 2008

Barack Obama's election special seems to be gathering speed, but in a move sure to slow it, if not derail it eventually, he's courting the Latino vote in CA with a risky and unpopular (among all but Latinos) ploy:
Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.
This is, to most people, a common sense issue on which the debate is over. Driving is a privilege, not a right, as is granted to those who are citizens or legal immigrants in the country. Whether you agree or not, that's how the vast majority of the public views the issue. File it under "political reality".

The Obama stance defies it. The electorate has made it clear that it does not support this sort of a program despite the arguments politicians have put out claiming it is a 'public safety' issue. They've also demonstrated, at least in California, that they'll punish any politician who continues to push this sort of an agenda.

I'm not sure what percentage of the Latino vote this may bring Obama (1 in 3 CA voters is Latino), but I would guess it won't be as much as he stands to lose among other California voters. And while the Clinton campaign would have to approach the subject carefully in order to use it, given the Hillary's "Spitzer" moment on one of the debates, they will find a way to use it.

Republicans, otoh, will have no qualms whatsoever about using this against Obama should he become the eventual Democratic nominee.

I live in an area with LOTS of immigrants, many of them illegal. I realize that the driver’s license issue makes people feel like we are setting those irksome little brown people straight, but it sure doesn’t stop those same little brown people from driving. Trust me, they still drive. Only now they do it without insurance or a recorded residence. Personally, I don’t see how the average Joe is better off with the license ban. We are talking about a driver’s license, not a green card. Let the DOT take care of the roads. Make INS do their job.

Won’t this just make it look like Hillary attacking another minority group?

It really has nothing to do with the public safety aspect of the argument, but instead the appearance that those who haven’t played by the rules are being rewarded with privileges they haven’t earned.

Now agree with that or not, that’s the objection most Americans who oppose driver’s licenses for illegals pose.

Frankly, nothing says that illegals will have real insurance or a real recorded residence when they apply for a license. They’ll certainly have "proof" of something in that regard to get them through the process of obtaining the license - whether it is valid is an entirely different point (the false ID market must salivate at the thought of that bit of new business). My guess is they would be less likely to turn over real addresses out of a basic mistrust of government and instead find way’s to avoid doing that by purchasing documents giving false addresses that will get them through the process.

But heck, if that becomes too onerous (real residence and real insurance), they’ll simply say "screw it" as they are now and drive without either. So handing out licenses certainly isn’t the panacea that some would like to claim it to be.

I have to consider Obama/Clinton tiff is a fraud.

I’ve felt its been in both their interests for Obama to VP up with Hillary. Obama gains experience and Hillary gains Obama. Obama also served to eclipse competators to Hillary in the Primary.

This current drama might be just that, drama. Its meant to distract from relatively hollow messages by both candidates as well as steal limelight from Republican candidates.

This move by Obama serves to do nothing but undermine his popularity so Hillary can win. There’s no other explanation for it to me. Its either suicide with a purpose or suicide without a purpose. I tend to believe its with a purpose.

Didn’t Shrillary already support Spitzer in his aborted attempt to do the same in NY?

They’ll still drive without insurance, regardless of whether they have a license. It’s a bit naive to think otherwise.

I don’t know how things work in your state, but when I moved to NV, they only check my insurance status when I register my car, not when I got or renewed my license. That makes more sense, anyway, since licenses are good for 4+ years, while registration is good only for one year.

That is the same in GA. I am making observations from personal experience with folks in my town. Situations may be different in other towns. Here, I know folks who have stayed for years after their visas expired. They have SS #’s, DLs, pay taxes, own homes and cars, send kids to school, pretty much live like everyone else. I am amazed to find out that there is no system to check that a person has actually left when the visa expires. It is basically an honor system. I imagine that INS will have a much tougher time finding even a fraction of the illegals if they cut off SS cards and DL’s. Am I wrong there? These folks are hiding in plain sight. If you want to know who is here and where they are, INVITE them to come sign up.

Bottom line - if you want to discourage illegal immigration then make INS and State Dept. actually DO their jobs! If you want to encourage MORE uninsured motorists, untaxed wages and identity theft, then cut of SS card and DL’s

Now Mr & Mrs illegal can get a JOB driving and put more Americans out of work. Those 18 wheelers makin 60,000 a year replaced by Mr. "I only want the jobs Americans no longer want".

Of course Americans do not want to drive truck for $6.00 per hour or hang dry wall or frame houses for minimum wage but in CA and AZ and many more states that is now being done by illegals and so much for the jobs Americans won’t do.

Americans can not live on 7 or 8 dollars per hour. As long as cheep labor is handy no business will pay a living wage if they can possibly replace workers with illegals.

My contention is that the number of uninsured motorists has absolutely no relation to the number of illegal aliens holding driver’s licenses. Driving without insurance is more a function of cash flow than immigration status (there are plenty of legal US residents who drive without insurance). Since you made the initial claim, it’s up to you to provide data that supports your assertion.

The number of illegals working (hence, untaxed wages) also won’t decrease. Nor will identity theft. An illegal can get a fake social security card whether or not he has a driver’s license.

You make a bunch of claims with no evidence to support them...try working on providing proof, rather than fiats.

Try reading more closely: "I am making observations from personal experience with folks in my town"
Right there at the top of my post. This is what I see in my neighborhood. The "proof" is from my conversations with Hector and John and Alejandro - not from a TV show or a news article. It is from talking to my insurance agent about the number of uninsured motorist claims going up. And I didn’t say anything about DECREASING identity fraud. I do think it may GO UP as a result of the ban on DL and SS - you know, supply and demand. I know people that were paying taxes who are now working for cash.

The number of voters he might gain from the Latino community probably is greater than those he will lose. Few people vote single issue, and as President he won’t be setting state policies. Republicans won’t want to make it an issue out of fearing angering immigrant populations, and Obama, if he gets the nomination, can choose what to emphasize. The problem for Obama is to win the nomination. If he doesn’t, then none of this matters.
