No Fat people or dogs allowed

The new "whites only" sign. And naturally, the story is from Mississippi. From the "Junkfood Science" blog:
It has actually happened. Lawmakers have proposed legislation that forbids restaurants and food establishments from serving food to anyone who is obese (as defined by the State). Under this bill, food establishments are to be monitored for compliance under the State Department of Health and violators will have their business permits revoked.
The "representatives" responsible for this travesty are:
Representative W.T. Mayhall, Jr., a retired pharmaceutical salesman with DuPont-Merk. Its co-authors are Bobby Shows, a businessman, and John Read, a pharmacist.
And it is a bi-partisan effort, two of them being Republicans and one a Democrat.

You can read the body of House Bill 282 at the link above.

But here's the summary:
An act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the state department of health; to direct the department to prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese and to provide those materials to the food establishments; to direct the department to monitor the food establishments for compliance with the provisions of this act; and for related purposes.
So Sandy Szwarc, of the Junkfood Science blog, actually tracked down one of the authors, Mayhill, and asked him if this was a tongue-in-cheek attempt to gain attention for the problem. The answer?
He said that while, regrettably, he doesn’t believe his bill will pass, this is serious. He wrote it, he said, because of the “urgency of the obesity crisis and need for government action.” He hopes it will “call attention to the serious problem of obesity and what it is costing the Medicare system.”
And yes, Mayhill claims to be a Republican — most likely a John McCain Republican.

And although I'm pretty sure this won't pass, it still pretty much points out, given the authors, that the era of limited government, if it ever really lived, is now indisputably dead.

Absolutely disgusting. I don’t even feel like joking about it.

In a just world, these clowns would be run out of their office.

This is just a tip of the iceberg, what we can expect under the mission-creeping aegis of "national healthcare"

Thank god I probably won’t be around to see it when it takes the turn for the worse

You go now, you too fat, you been here four hours. (ya had to be there)

This stuff really bothers me, and it’s causing me to rethink my position on heathcare and social policies in general. My position is essentially one of practicality, we have a healthcare system now where half of the dollars in health care spending pass through government, and it is broken, and a national healthcare plan is virtually assured, so I just want it to be as good as it can be.

However, as much as any plan I would endorse would not have these kind of totalitarian elements like telling fat people they can’t buy the food they want, I am coming around to the reality that this is what people with power will do.

I am not opposed to social spending in general, but it just sickens me when social spending is put in place to help people, and then because it’s the public’s money, they think it’s okay to restrict such basic rights.

This kind of thing (not specifically this, since it won’t pass) makes me understand why you guys want to tell the government that if it can’t afford to to have these social programs without restricting my rights, then they should stop the program, not rip up the Bill of Rights, or in short, tell them to fu*k off.

I’ll support some liberal social policies, but anything that can be used a carrot now and stick later, well they can use it as a stick now, and I’ll tell them where they can stick it.

The fat guys answer, I didn’t ask for your Medicare, and I will be happy to have you refund every payroll tax cent I have put in and opt of the program. Until I get my check, gimme my Baconator.

People ARE the problem.

I reserve the right to continue arguing about this stuff as I see fit.

Cap, I remember hearing that and I can’t, for the life of me, recall where. I think it was all-you-can eat sushi and for some reason I’m recalling rugby, but that’s as far as I’m getting. Shed some light, if you will, and blow away my old mental cobwebs.

And they laughed when I proposed my "No fat chicks" law...

I was in Key West and stayed in a place with a semi-private beach.

There were old, fat, foreign, naked people everywhere.

For most people on this planet, me included, clothes should NOT be optional in public.

"Sadly, no, just ugly old people from elsewheres in the world"

Somebody evidently added ’ugly old people to ’Give me your poor, your tired, your huddled masses,..." . More evidence that we need to enforce out borders.

WTF?????

And just how do they propose to discover who is obese? Can you get a medical exemption if you have a thyroid problem or are scheduled for stomach stapling or liposuction? Will the obese be required to carry an "obese ID card", or will the skinny people get their non-obese ID cards?

What are these people smoking, and where can I get some?

LOL. This is probably the only reason I’d favor nude beaches or nude whatever...

It would make the rest of us not so old, not so fat, people feel better about our not so young, not so thin, not so busty, bodies.

The way it is now, the usual bodies we see belong to Jessica Alba.

It’s really not fair.

;-)

I would be very content to be watching lots and lots of Jessica Alba’s running around in the buff. She may make me look old and ugly, but I think the benefits outweight any downsides.

That’s funny, if you go down to the Caribbean most of the naked old people are from New Jersey. The young ones are foreign though.

Quote from a friend after observing an extremely large woman in a Burger King:

"There ought to be a weight limit on tights."

"There ought to be a weight limit on tights."

I sometimes wonder whether requiring the wearing of a chador is always wrong. Once, long ago, I saw standing on a street, in full public view, an extremely large woman sloppily clad in shorts and a halter top, surmounted by a halo of extremely large curlers. She was looking for something, evidently, as her head swung back and forth, reminding me of an early warning radar site with a large antenna atop an even larger bunker. *shudder*. This vision has haunted me for many years, and I fear it has affected my relationships with women adversely.

Uh oh, this is going to be a problem. According to new research, the government is going to have to mandate smoking and overeating...
In a paper published online Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine journal, Dutch researchers found that the health costs of thin and healthy people in adulthood are more expensive than those of either fat people or smokers.

The best things these medlers could ever do would be ban themselves from medling in our lives. Return to the republic form of government we were given and guaranteed by our Constitution. A democracy is chaos at best. We better wake up!!

This law is a trojan horse, the line about medicare costs gives it away. Someone who was genuinely preoccupied with obesity to bsu8ch a degree that they were prepared to implement a fascist law to prevent it wouldn’t give a toss about medicare costs. The truth is these guys are against medicare, and they want the public to believe that those in charge of their tax dollars are out of control.
