Berkeley waves the white flag
Posted by: mcq on Tuesday, February 05, 2008

Who says pressure doesn't work:
A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two City Council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli on Monday proposed that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.

The City Council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its meeting next Tuesday.

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."
Yeah, well, while bailing on their previous position certainly will reduce the outrage and pressure, I certainly don't buy that their position suddenly changed to the point that they no longer "hate" the Marines.

Not everyone agrees, of course:
The council appears split on the idea of backing down. Some council members said the original proposals inadvertently insulted veterans and those currently serving in the military. Others said Berkeley should stand by its convictions.

"People are used to Berkeley taking a stand for peace, but you have to do it intelligently," said Councilman Kriss Worthington, who voted against sending the letter calling the Marine Corps unwelcome. "You don't want to slap one group in the face and then, the next minute, slap the other group. I think we have an obligation to be thoughtful and sensitive and not be counterproductive to the cause of peace."
Right. Let's not discriminate against the Marines, let's tell all service people we hate them - in a thoughtful and sensitive way, of course, because that is what is important.

The Code Pinkos, of course, are disappointed:
"I hope they're not acting out of intimidation," said Code Pink spokeswoman Medea Benjamin. "Berkeley is a city of peace, and a recruiting station does not fit Berkeley's values."
"Berkeley values". Give me a break.

As Winston Churchill once said:
"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
The Marines wish you pleasant dreams, Berkeley.

Yeah... I think that ship already sailed, lady...

I’d always thought that was an Orwell quote...

I continue to be spitting-mad at Berkeley... I wouldn’t go there if you offered to pay me.

When I read the title, I first thought Berkeley was finally declaring itself a de facto city of France.

I’ll volunteer to give them the nudge if necessary.

Guess someone saw that the Federal ’values’ gravytrain might come to a screeching halt, possibly upsetting their plans for delivering future ’Berkley values’ to the rest of us.

That they ostensibly did this as a protest against DADT, which in essence means partly in my name, pisses me off even more than their support for Code Pinko. I strongly oppose DADT and want it repealed, but not like this. Not with this crowd and not in this manner. I abhor what they have done and have nothing but great anger at their treatment of the Marines. It is assinine thinking (typical of the Left) and despicable to engage in this kind of dishonorable behavior allegedly for a good cause. They are so stupid to not even realize that besides the fact that the fight over DADT is with Congress which passed the law and not the military which is bound to uphold it, but their actions have smeared both straight AND gay Marines. I call BS and want nothing to do with these nutjobs from Berkeley. They do not represent me or any gay vet I know.

This isn’t about DADT, no matter what they say. No, this is about their hate of the military. DADT is just a rationalization.

Their stupidity is their poor tactics. But they definitly know who their target is.

Incidently, when Scott Erb or whoever goes out to defend Berkely in cases like this, he’s simply showing his true colors. Like when he’s defending that vile anti-semite, jimmy Carter.

Yes, don’t let them see you actually hate the Marines! Far better to cloak your hatred so it’s hidden from everyone else!

Reminds me of Tom Lehrer’s comment in his song about National Brotherhood week where he (in deliberate irony) talks about hating people who don’t love everyone.

DADT is an excuse. It’s an excuse on college campuses, too, when ROTC is excluded because they supposedly discriminate. All the anti-recruiter stuff about wanting recruiters out of schools where they prey on helpless minor children is an excuse, too.

Does anyone think it’s any more complicated than, "We do not want ANYONE to join the military?"

The rhetoric can be about gays or it can be about underage students or it can be about poor people (ie. racial minorities) but does anyone actually think it’s not about being opposed to the military right across the board?

A couple of them might not want to be *seen* as hating Marines, but that’s what it is. THIS Marine recruiting station isn’t on campus. Isn’t "lying" to the economically disadvantaged. And isn’t targeting high school students! This Marine recruiting station recruits *adults* attending college or university (not poor or disadvantaged) to be officers. Not poor dumb kids who don’t know better and will end up cannon fodder in "Bush’s illegal war" but smart, well educated young people who will be officers in the Marine Corps when "Bush’s illegal war" is all but over.

I thought it was an Orwell quote too.

“San Francisco is a mad city - inhabited for the most part by perfectly insane people whose women are of remarkable beauty”

At least Kipling got the first bit right. Code Pink blew the "remarkable beauty" part.

It’s not an Orwell quote, it has, IIRC been an APOCRYPHAL Orwell quote...I’m not sure it was Churchill but mayhap Bartlett’s has a source.

Oh I know that, the extreme Left usually cloaks their nonsense in the trappings of some other "cause". I didn’t appreciate this in when San Francisco turned away the USS Iowa, supposedly because of DADT and against the expressed wishes of the local gay vets group, I didn’t care for their BS on ROTC on college campuses and banning recruiters, etc. They are doing nothing more than continuing the assinine rhetoric of the 60s which is anti-military which I reject. I strongly supported the Solomon Amendment and thinks perhaps in Berkeley’s case we need a Solomon Part II!

Agreed. Let’s also not discriminate against citizens who just happen to be gay and not allow them to join the Marines. Let’s not discrminate against Marines, or those who want to join them.

Why is discrimination against gay people ok? Seriously, can someone please explain?

mkultra: It’s not okay, but neither is this twisted version of the Golden Rule by those on the extreme Left. DADT is not something dreamed up by the Marine Corps, but was a law passed by Congress and signed by Slick Willie. If you want this law repealed, as I do, then your fight is with Congress NOT the Marines. It’s not a difficult concept.

I’m pretty much on record as thinking DADT should be done away with. But as John said, it’s an issue with Congress and not with the Marines or any of the other services.

But think... if activists went after Congress and got the law changed, what excuse would they have to oppose ROTC on campus?

Do you really think most of them want that changed and want ROTC to move in?

"Why is discrimination against gay people ok? Seriously, can someone please explain? "

Why is discrimination against child molestors okay? Hey they cant hold jobs at schools. Isnt that the same type of discrimination you are speaking about?

Why is discrimination against parapaligics okay? Ever seen one as a firefighter or policeman? Isnt that the same type of discrimination you are speaking about?

Why is discrimination against retarded people okay? Ever seen a professional sports star that was handicapped? Isnt that the same type of discrimination you are speaking about?

The fact is that gay people can serve in the military. All they have to do is FOLLOW THE RULES JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE MILITARY. If they cant follow the rules they get bounced out JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE MILITARY.

Liberals just want special rules for them that they can agree with.

Umm fellas, Unwelcome Intruder is pretty much the job description of a marine. If you can’t make it through Code Pink to a recruiting office, good luck with Basic. And if you can’t handle the the Berkeley City Council’s scorn, good luck in Ramadi. And if you expect appreciation and sweet reason from everybody, grow up.

Ramadi? You don’t keep up with the news out of Iraq anymore, do you? Sweet irony.

Speaking of irony, you don’t do that well either. Isn’t Berkeley the capital city of the diversity and tolerance movement?

Heh...

Really McQ? You’re going to pull the "they say they’re tolerant but they’re not tolerant of meeeee" whine out? You’re better than that.

I will unironically point to the irony that the Berkeley City Council thought that calling the marines "unwelcome intruders" was derogatory and that the Corps’ partisans also are getting their panties in twist taking it the same way, when, in fact, being unwelcome intruders is the core function of marines.
