Bush: McCain a "true conservative"
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, February 10, 2008

Seriously, that's what he said:
John McCain is a "true conservative," President Bush says, although the presumptive Republican presidential nominee may have to work harder to convince other conservatives that he is one of their own.
And, of course, Mr. Medicare part D and NCLB would know, wouldn't he?

Didn’t Bush have good things to say about Mr. Putin after looking into his soul?

With that track record its going to be a long 4 years.

BTW, can you recall the President?

I tuned into to Limbaugh for the 1st time in a long time last week. He was talking about how movement conservatives have to start looking to build from roots up- local elections.

WOW.

Things must be really bad if even Rush is touting the rebuild from the ground up route. Or maybe he’s just depressed over McCain/Hillary

It depresses me when words become merely tags to use whenever convenient, regardless of what they’re supposed to mean. Those words eventually lose their ability to communicate anything, or even become the opposite of what they once meant (see "liberal").

The left has done that for a long time. It’s unfortunate to see those nominally on the right, such as Bush, doing the same thing.

It’s a matter of perspective, Billy.
I’ve been saying it for years; Bush is at best a centrist.
McCain, meanwhile, lost the 2000 primary to Bush because he came down to the left of Bush.

On the basis of their obviously twisted perceptions of whaty constitutes a conservative, I will dismiss the whole bleeding mess.

Anyone who denies McCain is a true conservative doesn’t know what the meaning of conservatism in America is. Apparently, to some it’s a select club, a strictly enforced ideology where violation of a few of its tenets on emotional issues gets one tossed out of the club. Of course, most Republicans don’t see it that way, many Americans who consider themselves conservative agree with McCain on a variety of these emotional issues, and the history of conservatism is to see the state with a role in protecting social values, including the use of social welfare programs. Indeed, liberalism (as in free market capitalism) was originally distrusted by conservatives as being too much an anything goes approach — Huckabee is probably the closest to a traditional conservative in the contest.

I understand that most people don’t study political history and ideology, and may think that somehow the grafting of classical liberal thought on to conservatism was something clear and straight forward, and that those who break with it are somehow not conservative. But that’s patently absurd. What’s also bizarre is that people posting to this blog who are really so-called ’neo-libertarian’ are coopting conservatism as their own. Comme bizarre!

except that we’re not talking about some academic definition of conservatism, or conservatism under Teddy Roosevelt, but rather Barry Goldwater/Ronal Reagan Conservatism, by which neither one of these candidates fit the mold and many of which are found severely lacking.

If you come into a debate not understanding the definition and changing them as you go along, don’t be surprised when you can’t understand what’s going on.

Well why don’t you help us out and give us the official definition of a true conservative.

" violation of a few of its tenets on emotional issues gets one tossed out of the club. "

While you are at it, how many tenets are there, what are they, and how many can you violate (even a percentage will suffice) before you are not considered ’true’?
