Russia: Satellite shot a weapons test
Posted by: McQ on Sunday, February 17, 2008

Of course it is:
Russia said Saturday that U.S. military plans to shoot down a damaged spy satellite may be a veiled test of America's missile defense system.

The Pentagon failed to provide "enough arguments" to back its plan to smash the satellite next week with a missile, Russia's Defense Ministry said in a statement.

"There is an impression that the United States is trying to use the accident with its satellite to test its national anti-missile defense system's capability to destroy other countries' satellites," the ministry said.

And the recent stray Russian bombers just lost their way, I’m sure.

How dare those Russians insinuate that we would use this to increase our military capabilities. I am certain the tecnology involved in smashing an old spy satellite is not transferrable to weapons meant to smash new spy satellites, and there will be no problem with orbital debris because we are neater and cleaner than the Chinese.

Ah Russia, land of the Truthers...

Considering that at least one American news channel (MSNBC, I think, but may be wrong—I heard it while passing through the room) said almost exactly the same thing, let’s not get too snarky on the Russians, please.

It likely could have been that channel reporting on Russia’s claim.

Didn’t we kick up a bit of a similar fuss when China shot down one of its own satellites?

We sure did, but this is entirely different.

Scott—the portion of the report I heard made no reference to Russia. It seemed to be describing the shootdown as a missile test all on its own. In fact, the lead-in was somthing like "the US will be testing its missile defense system by attempting to shoot down...etc."

That does sound like MSNBC... "In absence of facts, we will state opinion as if it were fact"

Suppose... is this about the glory days?

Russia was really only something to behold when she was arrayed against the strength of the United States.

Oh. Of course. Entirely.

From what I recall they didn’t give anyone notice that they were going to be doing it.
