Berekely - class and support
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, February 19, 2008

I'm not sure anyone, especially the Marines, expected anything better out of the classless Berekely City Council or Mayor:
As hundreds of protesters on both sides of the Iraq War debate demonstrated in Berkeley Tuesday, the city's mayor told officials with the Marine recruiting office in town they should not expect an apology.

"I think it's unwanted," Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates said. "I think it stands (that) we didn't want them here and they came here. And (they are) unwelcome, you know we'd like them to leave voluntarily. So I don't think an apology is in order."
But they support the troops:
"We apologize for any offense to any families of anyone who may serve in Iraq. We want them to come home and be safe at home," Bates, a retired U.S. Army captain, said last week.

Apologies to the families? The council should go the the recruiters and apologize to THEM. And did the council repeal Code Pinko’s permission slip to abuse them? The Semper Fi Act should still go through.

I wonder how popular this will be with the taxpayers of Berkeley? They are up to almost $100,000 in police overtime pay because of the riots their officials encouraged. That alone would be enough to make me vote against these clowns.

Just curious, how are the recruitment rates at the Bezerkely office going of late? Same? More than usual? It would certainly be interesting (and refreshing) if there was a silent public backlash to all this loud posturing.

They should apologize to the service members they "support" by saying that they should never have had the option to speak to a recruiter or join the military in the first place.

It’s insulting.

Just like all the anti-recruiting is essentially insulting. It can be nothing but insulting because it infantilizes those who join the military.

after working with a Maj from berekely I think the city counsel should change their stance from "we don’t want recruiters" to "we ain’t worth recruiting"
