Democrats on Trade: not if it costs me votes
Posted by: Jon Henke on Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Democrats like to insist that Republicans ignore scientists while Democrats follow the scientific evidence, so it's frustrating to see them put on their know-nothing, pandering hats when it comes to the subject of free trade. While the dismal science of economics has reached an overwhelming consensus that free trade is a net positive for a country, Democrats are willing to trade science for votes.

Hillary Clinton:
In some of her strongest language to date, [Hillary Clinton] said at the debate that she would “opt out” of the trade pact if Canada and Mexico did not renegotiate it.
Barack Obama:
Said Obama, "One million jobs have been lost because of NAFTA, including nearly 50,000 jobs here in Ohio. And yet, 10 years after NAFTA passed, Sen. Clinton said it was good for America. Well, I don't think NAFTA has been good for America — and I never have."
When Clinton and Obama talk about repealing, opting out of, or renegotiating trade agreements, what they're fundamentally saying to people is, "I don't think you should be allowed to buy and sell from foreigners."

In addition to being economically illiterate and an inaccurate portrayal of the facts, that kind of illiberal thinking is every bit as xenophobic as the nativists who don't want foreigners coming to America because they will "take our jobs."

Between that, Hillarycare (or ObamaCare), and tax hikes.........I advise all readers of this blog to start socking $$$ away in your mattress or offshore accounts, anywhere they can’t get their grubby hands on it. Because you’re going to need it.

If i decided to leave the country because of my views on things such as healthcare and personal responsibility, where the hell could i go? Seems to me there really isnt much of anywhere to go if your views on socialism are that it should die a horrible death.

Wait until they figure out the only way we can get big screen TVs is to buy them from the foreigners who make them.

Another campaign slogan collides with reality.

I want to hear someone ask the candidates about how other countries would respond to increased tariff barriers. Not that anyone will actually bother to worry about retaliation, anyway.

Look. I didn’t do anything to make my labor more valuable. I admit it. Now, a guy that cannot speak English or read his own native language can come in and do my low skilled job from day one. Therefore, it is the responsibility of government to ensure that I keep my job, even at the detriment of our own economy. Why can’t you people understand that?
