 Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to get her stalled "ethics reform" bill off the ground again and has struck upon a rather novel idea. They'll form an outside committee in which she picks 3 members and Republican Minority Leader Boehner picks 3 members (none can be members of Congress) and turn ethics probes over to them (it only requires 2 of them to bring charges and they can bring those charges anonymously).

Says Democratic Congresswoman and Rules Committee Chairwoman Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY):
“What makes people think that six people chosen at random would have more ethics, more intelligence, more judgment than we have?” (Rules Committee Meeting, February 27, 2008)
Excuse me, I'm going to be laughing so hard for the next five or so minutes I won't be able to blog.

You can pick six people at random from a phone book and I would be willing to bet they are much more honest and intelligent than members of Congress.

They allow anonymous accusations by hand picked partisans and then wonder why we think six people chosen at random have more intelligence and better judgement.

Where is she getting this idea that they’d be chosen at random? Pelosi and Boehner would be choosing them. This would be an outside committee only in the sense that the people wouldn’t be members of Congress. They would still be chosen by Congressional leadership.
