And Alan Dershowitz is again shown to be a fool. Remember this concerning Spitzer-gate?
I have two reactions. One, I feel terrible for Eliot and his family. But I feel that this is a America-only story that we have to put in perspective. You know, big deal, married man goes to prostitute! In Europe, this wouldn't even make the back pages of the newspaper. It's a uniquely American story. We're a uniquely, you know, pandering society and hypocritical society, when it comes to sex.
The richest man in Great Britain was a customer of the same high-end prostitution service patronized by Gov. Spitzer.
The Duke of Westminster, listed as the world's 46th richest person by Forbes magazine, hired four hookers over a six-week stretch in late 2006 and early last year, the News of the World reported last year.
Despite his incredible wealth, multi-billionaire Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor haggled with one of the Emperors Club girls for the cost of their date, according to the report.
And, in fact, it was complete with a post game analysis from one of the players:
Prostitute Zana Brazdek, then 26, described the 56-year-old Grosvenor as dull and demanding.
"I thought his conversation was quite boring," the Lithuanian woman told the newspaper. "He talked about the Army, going to Afghanistan and bin Laden. And he wanted unprotected sex. I refused."
Well isn't that wonderful.
More importantly though, instead of being essentially sniffed at and then ignored, as Dershowitz contended, there were consequences:
The duke was an official in the ministry of defense, overseeing Britain's reservists - including thousands who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He recently stepped down from that position due to the scandal and subsequent media attention.
Media attention? The media attention was responsible for the duke's demise? Yes sir, Dershowitz knows all about those sophisticated Europeans, doesn't he?
Speaking of blase Europeans, I seem to recall something called the ’Profumo Affair’ some years ago, involving a British government official and a prostitute. Of course that was some time ago and involved those stodgy Anglo-Saxons, who are not really European anyway, n’est pas? Such a thing could not possibly happen in any truly civilized country.
(Chirac, Cosimo Mele, Gunther Verheugen, Ferdinand Piech, ...)
Actually, Mitterrand and Kohl were each known to have mistresses. It wasn’t widely publicized, and these were, I believe, long term relationships. I’ve also heard from sources I trust that Nixon and Brezhnev each hired prostitutes for the other during their Washington and Moscow summits (the host hiring for the guest). While I was working in DC the rumors I heard (and some I know are accurate) showed a rather shocking level of infidelity and dishonesty. Neither political party seemed more virtuous than the other in that sense (I remember Senator Tower was voted the man women least liked to get on the elevator alone with), and I saw a lot of women who I considered "power groupies," beautiful young women swarming over old, ugly Senators and Congressmen. It was weird.
