Clinton’s NAFTA bomb
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Hillary Clinton's calendar as first lady, some 17,000 pages, were released today. One little gem, or bomb, depending on how you view it, that showed up is this:
11:30 am -
11:45 am

Room 450, OEOB

PARTICIPANTS: Approx 120 expected to attend
(See briefing book for further info)

- Alexis Herman intros HRC for brief remarks
-HRC concludes program
That was Nov. 10, 1993 - prior to the passage of NAFTA - and, as two attendees remember it, it was hardly a 'drop-by' but instead an event built around her attendance. The purpose was to build support among the attendees, women in international business, for the passage of NAFTA. There was no press present, but here are what those attendees remember:
"It wasn’t a drop-by it was organized around her participation," said one attendee. "Her remarks were totally pro-NAFTA and what a good thing it would be for the economy. There was no equivocation for her support for NAFTA at the time. Folks were pleased that she came by. If this is a still a question about what Hillary's position when she was First Lady, she was totally supportive if NAFTA.

That first attendee recalls that the First Lady's office in the East Wing put together "the invitation list, who was invited authorizations and all that stuff."
As you might imagine, those attendees speaking out today were none to happy with the anti-NAFTA rhetoric Clinton has been spouting of late:
And what is this attendee's response to Clinton today distancing herself from NAFTA? "For people who worked hard to pass NAFTA and who support the importance of markets opening for the economy in the long term, they're very upset. A number of the women who were there are very upset. You need to have some integrity in your position. The Clintons when Bill Clinton was president took a moderate position on trade for Democrats. For her to repudiate that now seems pretty phony."

Recalls a second attendee, "they were looking for women in international trade who supported NAFTA. Senator Clinton came by at the end. And of course she asked for our support and help in passing NAFTA."

Women who attended that event, the second attendee says, have been incredulous to see Clinton distance herself from the trade agreement as she campaigns today. "They're all saying, 'What's this all about?' We all heard it firsthand." She says Clinton isn't being honest with voters today.
Now I know this comes as a huge surprise to all of you [/sarcasm].

I can't wait for the spinmeisters in the Clinton War Room to tackle this one. Oh, and for the record, David Gergan was acting as a sort of MC at the event. It would be nice if someone jogged his memory as well.

Hillary’s such a loser.

Is there any doubt what the conclusion is? She was for NAFTA before she was against it.

Wow, this will certainly sink her campaign. It is almost as if you have proven that she wasn’t even there. I mean that 120 small business women probably did not even notice her attendance or speech since it was just a "drop by" instead of a "major event". She is doomed. Well done man, Fox News should be contacting you any minute for a full hours worth of discussion regarding this monumental piece of investigative work. Bravo.

A Clinton lying? Old news, we need to concentrate on the future. Nothing to see here.

I wonder if it is an inherited trait. She works as an investment analyst for a hedge fund. Hmmm.

Now into the second day of this release of Mrs. Clinton’s schedule, nothing I have heard on FOX or CNN has been brought up about this story. Mr. Obama’s problem continues to dominate the news.
