Is he serious, or is this parody?

For those of you who don't click through, Matt Stoller is suggesting that John McCain is sending "signals" to racists by kicking off his "Service to America" tour in the birth town of a civil rights worker who was murdered 40 years ago. Not the city where the civil rights worker was murdered - the town where he was born two decades previously.

So, on one hand, you have a very, very thin connection to a tragedy that happened 40 years ago. On the other hand, you have the fact that the stops on McCain's "Service to America" tour are designed to "represent a chapter in McCain's life and military career", and the Meridian, Mississippi event is "not far from the naval air station where McCain once served as a naval flight instructor and McCain Field is named for his grandfather, a Navy admiral and native Mississippian."

Obviously, it has to be the racism.

I know Matt a bit and he's much too smart to believe what he wrote there. In fact, I'm not sure I know anybody dumb enough to find that plausible.

Sadly, I fear the Left's biggest contribution to the "conversation about race" this year is going to be casual charges of racism, exploitation of civil rights tragedies and exacerbation of racial tension for political gain.

The problem is McCain might actually give validity to this by making some change to his plans or issuing an apology.

Actually, the "proof" is that it’s near the location where Reagan gave his speech that supposedly sparked the "civil rights backlash". And that McCain would never condemn that speech. Which is the old "when did you stop beating your wife" trick.

What it boils down to is this: that because Reagan gave a speech in that state to which the ultraLeft gives a distorted meaning, any Republican who steps foot in Mississipi is automatically a racist.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there a large segment of the progressive chattering class that believes southern white males are just slightly brighter than a heap of bricks. Since, in their minds, something less than 1% of southern white males could even recall the name of the current VP even prompted with "_ick _heney", how can they reconcile such a deep knowledge of history among such Neanderthals that they’d actually pick up on such a subtle signal?

But...but....McCain could no more disown the racists anymore than he could disown the Mississippi community!

Look, if these idiots want to throw race into EVERYTHING (except Obama’s pastor of course!) let them.

All they’re going to do is guarantee that all but the most guilt-ridden white liberals DON’T vote for the Democrat.
