Just because you can make a pot of money doesn’t mean you’re particularly bright (update)

And Ted Turner takes every opportunity presented to prove that point. Ted pontificates on global warming and not acting to stop it:
Not doing it will be catastrophic. We'll be eight degrees hottest in ten, not ten but 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow. Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals.
My guess he either pulled that out of his rear end or he's been listening to Al Gore again (and Al pulled it out of his).

So we have Gore, Turner, Sharpton and Roberson pushing this meme now, do we? Beside the dubious science which now seems to be coming apart at the seams, if you didn't have any other reasons to blow this nonsense off, there are four great reasons to do so.

UPDATE: If those four reasons aren't enough, this should make you very afraid. Obama answering a question from a woman at a rally:
A woman at a town hall asked the Illinois senator if elected president would he consider tapping the former vice president for his Cabinet, or an even higher level office, to address global warming.

"I would," Obama said. "Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years from now."
Al Gore - Climate Czar.

Whoa - a chill just ran up my spine (that shouldn't happen with global warming should it?).

Here I was thinking that the warmer it is, the more plants grow. I guess Turner’s right: look at all the lush vegetation in Antarctica.

Don’t forget the AG of Massachusetts suing the EPA for not doing anything about CO2 being a pollutant and stopping global warming.

More idocy from Massachusetts

Ted’s not alone.

On the up side, the world likes the US better this year than last year.
If the Maine Mosquito could get out from under the record snowfall in Maine caused by global warming he could probably explain how that all happened.

Gee, what a shock, that the Global Warm- oops, I mean "climate change" (which is sooooooooooo convenient as a catch-all instead of holding yourself to just warming) crowd are trying to make this a money/power grab, since they can’t actually convince enough people anymore.

Disgusting

What office is above Cabinet head in the Executive branch? Vice President, of course. Poor Al: always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

I yurn for the days when we used to call ’Climate Change’, ’the weather’.

Even with the catchphase change, the are still tied to a message of a warming trend.

I’ll make a prediction that we’ll enact some ridiculous legislation and when a cooling trend if firmly establish, they’ll claim victory even though the rest of the world will have made up the difference and then some with their C02 emissions.

Some more concrete harm can be done if we are entering a cooling phase and are not adjusting for it. Crop production will go down slightly and other consequences. Normally they’d be slight to slim but considering we will be in denial until the trend is well under way we will be late to the game correcting for them. It doesn’t take much of a shortfall in a commodity to send prices shooting up.

It was uber-conservative consultant Frank Luntz who recommended that wingnuts use the phrase climate change instead of global warming.
Memo exposes Bush’s new green strategy

Oliver Burkeman in Washington
The Guardian, Tuesday March 4 2003

The US Republican party is changing tactics on the environment, avoiding "frightening" phrases such as global warming, after a confidential party memo warned that it is the domestic issue on which George Bush is most vulnerable.

The memo, by the leading Republican consultant Frank Luntz, concedes the party has "lost the environmental communications battle" and urges its politicians to encourage the public in the view that there is no scientific consensus on the dangers of greenhouse gases.

"The scientific debate is closing [against us] but not yet closed. There is still a window of opportunity to challenge the science," Mr Luntz writes in the memo, obtained by the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based campaigning organisation.

"Voters believe that there is no consensus about global warming within the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly.

"Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate."

The phrase "global warming" should be abandoned in favour of "climate change", Mr Luntz says, and the party should describe its policies as "conservationist" instead of "environmentalist", because "most people" think environmentalists are "extremists" who indulge in "some pretty bizarre behaviour... that turns off many voters".

Words such as "common sense" should be used, with pro-business arguments avoided wherever possible.

The environment, the memo says, "is probably the single issue on which Republicans in general - and President Bush in particular - are most vulnerable".
It’s a measure of how extreme wingnuts like Shark and jpm are when a term that was invented by a wingnut to be used by wingnuts to frame the debate is viewed by wingnuts as some kind effort by non-wingnuts to hoodwink the public.

Man, what a laugh.

Ever hear about the IPCC, formed in 1988?

The CC is for Climate Change.

I’m not overly shocked it can be traced back to UN ass-covering bureaucrats.
Man, what a laugh.
Well, you got something right.

So the Bush administration and the UN are calling it the same thing? Well, they must all be in on the conspiracy! Or, as Shark calls it, the "climate change" crowd.

Ha ha ha.

The same wingnuts who don’t believe that climate change is a fact are the same wingnuts who believe the earth is 6000 years old. Gore believes in gravity too, which of course means gravity doesn’t exist. It is a liberal myth!!!

Uh no, the Earth is billions, sorry, Bill-yuns and BILL-yuns of years old, Christ was the Son of God, AND Global Warming is a hoax. See Christian wingnuts don’t all think the Earf is 6,000 years old, ’cuz the Bishop of Usher and Newton did some ’cipherin’....Grow up MK. Not all Progressives believe in abortion or all of them are "Brights". People’s beliefs are not a party-line, cookie cutter menu sort of thing.

My major questions that I’ve never seen addressed, nor answered are thus:

What is the optimal climate for the planet?
Is it better to be warmer than we are now, or colder than we are now?
Is arable land greater with longer growing seasons in a warmer climate?
Does our ability to grow food go up or down based on changes in climate?

We should be looking at this from the point of view of maximising the planet to our benefit. If that includes a warmer world, we should be pushing for a warmer world, and figuring out how to achieve the best climate possible for our own sustainment.

Joe, be nice...

Don’t go shattering mk’s world-view. He gets all shrill and annoying when you do that...

Though I suppose it’s hard to tell the difference between that and how he normally acts...
