I suspect subterfuge. The buyer is in cahoots with the marketing agency and is trying to drive down the value of the company by ticking off its biggest customer base. |

That is only until recently true: And that was noted in the post. The deal was completed 3 days ago. As I understand it, the ad campaign is older than that.

Do you completely lack a sense of humor? It’s funny! Why would this PO anyone? Why is it so funny mr Political Science professor? Perhaps you could explain why in the ’vodka’ universe half the United States would belong to Mexico.
Come on, you can explain why it’s funny, given a group called ’La Raza’ thinks it ought to be an accurate depiction of the world map.
Do you think they could make a funnier one for Palestine showing in an absolute world what it would look like if those Zionist loonies hadn’t gotten their way? They could market that in Gaza maybe eh?
Come on, you’re ’with it’ you can explain why I should think this is a funny map what with 12 million illegal immigrants from Mexico living and working in the US these days and our porous border being considered a major problem by ’most people’ in the voting public.
From what I recall of my relatives from Maine, it wouldn’t be ’funny’ if the next add they produced showed Maine as part of Canada in an absolute world. |

When did Oregon and southern Idaho become Traditional Mexican Territory?
(Me, I think an Absolut World where Canada was entirely annexed [Except for Nunavut and Quebec, which can have each-other} by the United States would be pretty hilarious. Canadians might be annoyed, I suppose, but we outnumber them nearly 10:1.) |

See Texas in that map? Texas fought for its independence from Mexico. Do you remember the Alamo? I wouldn’t be surprised to find Absolut’s sales in Texas plummet. |

Erbie telling QandO commenters to get a sense of humor? High-larious!
So, Herr Professor, you’d be OK with a map showing almost all of western Europe under a Muslim flag in an Absolut world? Or, almost all of eastern Europe under a Roman or Greek flag, in an Absolut world? Or, western Europe under a Swastika?
You’re really ok with this? Really? |

You’re really ok with this? Really? Sure scotch - hardy, har, har. It’s a barrel o’ laughs.
You see, this just goes to show what Scott really is. If there is anything out in the world that mocks the US, it’s funny. If the US does anything that can be interpreted as insulting to anyone or anything in the world, that is bad and sign of US imperialism.
Of course, a sign of Mexican imperialism is ok and ’funny!’. |

you’d be OK with a map showing almost all of western Europe under a Muslim flag in an Absolut world? Or, almost all of eastern Europe under a Roman or Greek flag, in an Absolut world? Or, western Europe under a Swastika? I doubt Absolut markets much in the Muslim world. I doubt the Roman or Greek flags would offend many or appeal to many. I don’t think people would take it seriously (though the swastika would offend based on the holocaust, so that really doesn’t it).
Being offended by this demonstrates the worst kind of hypersensitive nationalism that our country experiences. "Say anything at all critical of the US or even suggesting something that could be taken as questioning the mighty status of the US, and then you are doing BAD." Grow up. Get perspective. Get a sense of humor. Sheesh.
After all, in an Absolut world, those evil conquering Europeans would be sent back, and the Lakota, Apache, and other native nations would occupy, fight over, and enjoy their continent. ;-) |

But, you so smart! It went right over my head, yes it did. And I’ll need a history book to understand! yes!
I’ll just say the magic words... Rio Nueces, Mexico City, Winfield Scott, Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Are you trying to say only in a Mexican’s drunken vodka dream that half the US would belong to Mexico today? Aye Caramba! That’s even funnier isn’t it!After all, in an Absolut world, those evil conquering Europeans would be sent back, and the Lakota, Apache, and other native nations would occupy, fight over, and enjoy their continent. ;-) In which case the Absolut map of Mexico would be just as totally wrong. |

Of course, those Spaniards were part of that European invasion. But that’s the fun with this Absolut world stuff, you can make all sorts of mutually contradictory maps because it is not meant to be taken seriously. |

I’m not going to go into full blown Michele Malkin-like meltdown mode over this simply because it’s an ad and nothing more.
That having been said, this ad makes no sense from a marketing standpoint. It would be one thing if this was an ad for, say, Jose Cuervo.
But Vodka? I have many latin friends and not one of them drinks Vodka. I doubt this ad would encourage them to drink more vodka and if anything, I think Absolut’s sales would probably plummet from the resulting backlash. |

Why people are getting upset over this? Vodka ads are not meant to be taken seriously anyways... or perhaps I should drink Mikes Hard Lemonade and check my garage for a Ferrari, then bedroom for a hottie... and if they are not there, cry and moan about it on the internet. Let’s move on people, there are more important things to waste breath (bandwidth) on. |
