Bill Ayres: Still Self-righteous, self-absorbed, intellectually dishonest and a foul human being
Posted by: McQ on Friday, April 18, 2008

And still as radical a lefty as you'll ever find.

A few snippets from Bill Ayres blog:
I’m sometimes asked if I regret anything I did to oppose the war in Viet Nam, and I say “no, I don’t regret anything I did to try to stop the slaughter of millions of human beings by my own government.” Sometimes I add, “I don’t think I did enough.” This is then elided: he has no regrets for setting bombs and thinks there should be more bombings.

The illegal, murderous, imperial war against Viet Nam was a catastrophe for the Vietnamese, a disaster for Americans, and a world tragedy. Many of us understood this, and many tried to stop the war. Those of us who tried recognize that our efforts were inadequate: the war dragged on for a decade, thousands were slaughtered every week, and we couldn’t stop it. In the end the U.S. military was defeated and the war ended, but we surely didn’t do enough.
For the few who may not know, what he did, and apparently didn't feel he did enough of, was bomb places. And, in fact, the organization he was with, the Weather Underground, was responsible for killing 2 police officers and a Brinks guard, when, acting as common criminals, they robbed an armored car.

Thankfully, in 1969, 3 of the Weather Underground blew themselves up building a bomb they planned to plant at Ft. Dix, NJ, a US Army base. The bomb was packed with nails to inflict maximum casualties upon detonation. One of the three killed was Bill Ayers' girlfriend at the time.

Between October of 1969 and Sept. 1975 (when the participation of the US in the war in Vietnam was well over), the organization Bill Ayers was an integral part of was responsible for 24 bombings to include bombings at Harvard and MIT.

But, like most of the self-righteous and self-absorbed, he's good for a bit of rationalization and intellectual dishonesty to excuse his conduct:
2. Terror. Terrorism—according to both official U.S. policy and the U.N.—is the use or threat of random violence to intimidate, frighten, or coerce a population toward some political end. This means, of course, that terrorism is not the exclusive province of a cult, a religious sect, or a group of fanatics. It can be any of these, but it can also be—and often is—executed by governments and states. A bombing in a café in Israel is terrorism, and an Israeli assault on a neighborhood in Gaza is terrorism; the September 11 attacks were acts of terrorism, and the U.S. bombings in Viet Nam for a decade were acts of terrorism. Terrorism is never justifiable, even in a just cause—the Union fight in the 1860’s was just, for example, but Shernan’s [sic] March to the Sea was indefensible terror. I’ve never advocated terrorism, never participated in it, never defended it. The U.S. government, by contrast, does it routinely and defends the use of it in its own cause consistently.
Good lord, what a complete and obvious load of nonsense.

Back to his previous remarks about Vietnam:

"Many of us understood this, and many tried to stop the war."

So what was the purpose of Ayers' bombings? To try "to stop the war", right? A "political end", wouldn't you say? And how did he try to accomplish that political end? By using and threatening "random violence to intimidate, frighten, or coerce a population" toward that end.

Yet this pompous ass hasn't the intellectual honesty to admit he is what he decries and condemns.

In the entry below, he reveals two things - why he's a professor of English and that he's still a self-righteous and self-absorbed nincompoop who has no problem enjoying the benefits of a system he obviously doesn't understand in the least but has no problem condemning:
Capitalism played its role historically and is exhausted as a force for progress: built on exploitation, theft, conquest, war, and racism, capitalism and imperialism must be defeated and a world revolution—a revolution against war and racism and materialism, a revolution based on human solidarity and love, cooperation and the common good—must win.
This is who Barack Obama finds worthy of defense? Or was he as clueless about this as he claims to be about what Jeremiah Wright has been up to for 23 years?

And to top it off, Bill Ayers is a pig. Not the type he would define from days of yore, but a simple, ugly, miserable human pig as Donna Ron, who unfortunately got to know him better than she wanted too, attests.

This is the guy the left, Obama and Daily want to defend? The guy whose "exploits" 40 years ago are now excusable simply because of the passage of time and because he's now settled in to a "normal" life?

As they continue to defend Ayres, or wave off any significance concerning their relationship with him (imagine the same leeway being given to someone who had even a casual relationship with David Duke), they should understand that those who learn the story aren't going to be as accepting of their defense of him. And whether the left likes it or not, choosing to defend this man will count against judgment and character, whether they like it or not.

it. In the end the U.S. military was defeated

I thought the "troops were brought home".
I’ll have to remember this the next time I hear the "Bring the troops home" talking point.

Which is why I have always aid that it’s not that you hate that bothers liberals, but whom.

All good points, Bruce.

Clearly, the answer is ’yes’.
Which is why, by the way, Dean wants the supers to get it over... This kind of thing is exactly what he doesn’t want America seeing, and the extended primary is highlighting all the stuff he’ just as soon keep hidden.

Not that any of it is going to be offputting for the left; They judge character by a different yardstick than do most Americans. And that difference, I think will be ilustrated more clearly in this election, than it has been since Humphrey and Mondull lost their respective elections.

It’s also pretty sad that it took basically non-stop hectoring from Hannity to finally get someone in the MSM to REALLY inject this issue. Yes, it had been simmering around but finally erupted.

The vetting process is severely broken here.

From the linked article by Donna Run:
[Ayers] was entirely unrepentant for having been a terrorist himself. “I would do it again,” he told the Times when he was asked about having set a bomb in the Pentagon. I also discovered that he was a Distinguished Professor of Education at University of Illinois Chicago campus. I think that freaked me out more than anything. That a man so cruel and conscienceless could attain such a position enraged me.
Just as the defense of Ayers reflects poorly on Obama’s character, so does the employment of him as a "distinguished professor" erode the reputation of the University of Illinois. Whether they like it — or even so much as perceive and comprehend it — or not.

I continue to see posts comparing Obama’s relationship with Ayers to a hypothetical republican nominee’s relationship with David Duke. This is not accurate. He already has "Rev" Wright to fill that role. A more accurate comparison would be a republican nominee attending a fund-raising BBQ at the home of Eric Rudolph.

As usual, you dense righties are focusing on completely irrelevant things. Who cares if Obama is a close personal friend with an unrepentant ex-terrorist and a pig? Really. By the fall, all of this will be forgotten, and the media will have had time to restore Obama’s halo to its proper sheen, and we wise leftists will be cheering as our savior is swept into the White House.

You Republicans who think you actually have a chance this fall are living in fantasy-land. You might as well give up now. In fact, we really don’t even need to have the election. We should just crown Obama next month so that he can take over for Bush early. That way, there’s no chance at all that Iraq can become self-sufficiently stable before Obama pulls out.

The Bill Ayers statement, "In the end the U.S. military was defeated," is completely false. I challenge anyone to name one battle in Vietnam that the U.S. military lost. Name a U.S. military unit that surrendered in Vietnam. We lost no battles. None of our units surrendered. Ever.

In April 1972 while the Paris peace talks were underway, the North invaded the South in an offensive twice the size of Tet - 200,000 men. Nixon was furious and ordered Operation Linebacker, the systematic destruction of the North Vietnamese military in the South, North or in Laos. The Navy mined all the ports. USAF, USN and USMC fighters attacked military bases, airfields, rail and road networks, command and control, communications, electrical power grid and industrial facilities. The Easter Offensive, like Tet, was defeated by the Army of South Vietnam and U.S. tactical air power. General Vo Nguyen Giap, the hero of Dien Bien Phu, was fired.

In Paris on the 18th of December, the North walked out of the negotiations. Nixon responded with Operation Linebacker II, 100 to 150 B52 sorties per night over Hanoi and Haiphong. On the first night, our POWs in Hanoi heard the unmistakable thunder of 106 mk82 500 pound bombs per Buff and went wild. They all knew that the end of the war was near. The guards, who had tortured and mistreated them, were terrified. Soon, the NVA had exhausted their anti-aircraft munitions with no hope of resupply. Buff raids continued. On the 29th of December, Le Duc Tho returned to the table and agreed to U.S. terms in return for a halt of B52 raids.

By any modern standard, the Paris Peace Accords, signed in April 1973, constituted a U.S. military victory.

However, the democrat congress could not allow Nixon a victory, so they passed the Case-Church Amendment, prohibiting the U.S. armed forces from intervening on air sea or land of North or South Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia. They also reduced the South’s security assistance from $1.4B to $700M, ensuring the North would win. On April 30th 1975 the North seized control while we sat on out hands.

The human toll in the Vietnam War was 600,000 NVA, 500,000 ARVN and 58,249 Americans, a total of 1.15 million dead. Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come.

The statement, "I don’t regret anything I did to try to stop the slaughter of millions of human beings by my own government" is also false.

While I cannot attest to Ayers’ regrets, if he is referring to the U.S. government, it did not slaughter "millions of human beings."

The idol of the anti-war Left, Pol Pot slaughtered 2 million, one third of his countrymen.

The North Vietnamese killed 850,000 South Vietnamese in reeducation camps. Another 150,000 South Vietnamese boat people died fleeing their own country after it was taken by the North.

The war cost 1.15M lives; the "peace", 3M.

When we warn of the consequences of a premature withdrawal, it would be helpful to look at the history of South East Asia. Some of the same names (Kennedy, Murtha, Byrd, Obey) are still invested in America’s defeat.
