Obama refuses NC debate
Posted by: McQ on Monday, April 21, 2008

Given his performance in the last I can understand why. From the NC Democratic Party:
We regret to inform you that the proposed Democratic Presidential Debate scheduled for April 27 has been cancelled due to time constraints and logistical issues associated with such a large, national event.

You have shown tremendous passion and interest in being a part of history as Democrats are poised this year to elect the first female or African-American President. However, there were also growing concerns about what another debate would do to party unity.
Marc Ambinder gives you one version of the back story:
Despite pressure from the governor, from the local media, from their own-state campaign, Barack Obama's advisers refused to accept an invitation to debate in North Carolina because they did not want to give Hillary Clinton any excuse to stay in the race beyond Tuesday, assuming she doesn't fare that well.
Howard Kurtz gives you the most probable back story:
In political terms, Obama had little incentive for another face-off. He's comfortably ahead in the Tarheel State, and after drawing most of the tough questions in last week's ABC debate in Pennsylvania, he undoubtedly wasn't looking forward to a sequel.
Kurtz is right, Obama has very little incentive for another face off, especially given the way the last one went. So politically it makes sense. However, it also hands an increasingly desperate opponent a gift. A quick check of the Clinton website shows no reaction to this point, but it certainly will come.

The Clinton campaign, of course, will use "Republican tactics" and spin it as political cowardice.

Of course this is not from Obama’s decision to run from a fight but the concoction of the Right Wing Noise Machine.

Anyway, I think in general most of each party’s members are going to not be happy with their respective candidates.

I’m thinking 2008 could have record breaking low voter turnout. At least, its going to an odd one for sure.

The media has made it pretty clear that they feel that it’s okay to ask him more gotcha questions than Hillary because he’s the frontrunner. Why does he have an obligation to agree to debate formats that, by design, treat him unfairly compared to his rival?

I’m not saying he does. In fact, I believe I agreed with Kurtz by saying he had no incentive to do so.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t going to pay a political price for refusing the debate.

The question is does he pay more for refusing or is it possible he’d pay more if there was another debate. Apparently their calculation says it’s the latter.

I don’t buy the Howard Kurtz explanation.

After he loses in Pennsylvania, Obama’s side must know that the Clintons will be ready to hammer him with something. The Clintons will want to capitalize.

He doesn’t want to be in a debate where he has to answer questions about whatever it is they come after him with (there will be no Clinton fingerprints, per usual).

Here comes the whirlwind. This finale is going to be like an artillery battle in North Africa between the Germans and the Brits.

Flat territory, maximum straight-up political violence.

He doesn’t. You may be OK with that, but I’m not very impressed with a candidate who tucks tail and runs from any uncomfortable encounter. Even more so when he is surrounded (cocooned) by an unquestioning, and nationally syndicated support staff, as well as an adoring populace.

It doesn’t speak well to how well he can handle the stresses of the office which he is seeking though...

Sounds like he knows how to pick his battles. That’d be a pretty big improvement over the current administration.

So, badger, your position is the the most articulate candidate should just pussy out and not debate? And that’s a good example of picking the right battles? Riiiiiiight. What’s he going to do in the national debates (or will he pick not to battle there, either?) if he gets asked a hard question? Go into the foetal position and suck his thumb?

I mean, I know it’s against the rules to ask Great Leader Obama any questions he doesn’t like, but making it obvious wouldn’t seem to me to be a great example of properly picking one’s battles. I think his camp’s been panicked.

If I were the Clinton campaign I’d bring out the old empty chair ploy and accuse him of being a nomination chickenhawk. Too scared to debate a woman in NC, how’s he gonna stand up to any enemies?

We’ll see.

Huh. So much for the vaunted "public debate" process that some Obama-liberal on another board keeps hawking as being so much better than the "lockstep, suppress all debate" philosophy of the Republicans. Right...Obama is all for public debate and vetting until he realizes he has more to lose than gain.

Other than Socialist InSecurity "privatization", on which issue has this admin "lost the battle"?

The Dems took Congress in 2006 on an "anti-war/anti-corruption" platform...

We have increased our war effort since Nov., 2006- and Congress is still as corrupt as it ever was...

Why should I vote for a Dem majority that has totally failed in its two major "mandates"?

I’ve got to admit, there are side effects of the current Presidential campaign that I really like. First and foremost, not only is Bush not running again, but no one from his administration, nor anyone pretending to be, is running. Secondly, the one candidate - McCain - that the left is trying so desperately to taint with that association is not someone I am predisposed to defend.

In other words, your school-yard mantra, I know you are, but what am I, is laid bare for the infantile taunt that it always has been. "Wow, so Obama/Clinton won’t be as bad as Bush..." That inspires me as much as you saying your sh!t is better because it’s less vicious. And yet that is a pretty good description of the choice I have this election cycle. Whose stool shall we choose to be soiled with? I know the fiber with which McCain’s has been constituted, and the lack thereof with in Clinton’s. But your fella Obama sure is being mighty anal about revealing his. Likely an unintended consequence of you and the MSM’s desire to keep his diapers on.

The Republicans have invested a lot more time than I have. They have also put it all together better than I have and are just waiting for the day Obama is nominated to unleash a non-stop expose.

As if he wasn’t treated with kid gloves until recently. Please, this is a guy that refuses to talk to Fox news, doesn’t want tough debates, but says he will talk to our enemies. How’s that going to work out?

I caught this gem from the looney ..

Obama: The Postmodern Coup
"Barack Obama is a deeply troubled personality, the megalomaniac front man for a postmodern coup by the intelligence agencies, using fake polls, mobs of swarming adolescents, super-rich contributors, and orchestrated media hysteria to short-circuit normal politics and seize power. Obama comes from the orbit of the Ford Foundation, and has never won an election in a real contest. His guru and controller is Zbigniew Brzezinski, the deranged revanchist and Russia-hater who dominated the catastrophic Carter presidency 30 years ago. All indications are that Brzezinski recruited Obama as a student at Columbia University. Trilateral Commission co-founder Brzezinski wants a global showdown with Russia and China far more dangerous for the United States than the Bush-Cheney Iraq adventure. Obama is a recipe for a world tragedy. Obamas economics are pure Skull & Bones/Chicago school austerity and sacrifice for American working families, all designed to bail out the bankrupt Wall Street elitist financiers who own him. Obama’s lemming legions and Kool-Aid cult candidacy hearken back to Italy in 1919-1922, and raise the question of postmodern fascism in the United States today. No American voter can afford to ignore the lessons contained in this book.
If this is the way the "troofers" see Obama, then expect more of the same no matter who wins.

Dodging debates ain’t nuttin’.

You got to see the emerging European model for dodging.

I’d call that the updated blitzkrieg. Soon the place will be nicely made into one entity, and much more accomodating for Islamicization, without those pesky national sovereignties having enough power to resist.

(I guess I slipped off-topic there, or did I?)

He’s been listening to our enemies all along; racist anti-American preachers, terrorists, etc. But they are his friends.

The Greeks had a term for it: hamartia. The one flaw — different in every man — that makes him imperfect, vulnerable and gives his adversaries, if they discover it, the ability to bring him down. Achilles’ was his heel. Obama’s is his political glass jaw.

The supposedly-brilliant Democratic wunderkind can’t take a punch. Like a Hollywood actor, he’s only comfortable, quick and charismatic as long as the crowd is oohing and ahhing. But the moment that he is challenged — as we first saw in his presser after he lost the Ohio primary in March and again last week in the ABC debate — the mask shatters. What we see is what we would get with an Obama presidency: a man whose range is so small and ego so huge and fragile that when taken out of his comfort zone, he not only fails to shine, he barely is able to speak.
—Jed Babbin
I’ve seen this "glass jaw" metaphor in several places and I think it’s true. Aside from indifferent parents in childhood, Obama has never experienced any serious life setbacks. He may imagine that he shares in the oppression of blacks and has so been steeled, but not really. His hero, Malcolm X, suffered having his father murdered and his home burnt down by white supremacists. Obama attended an elite prep school in Hawaii, then highly ranked Occidental college, Columbia and later Harvard Law. Hats off to him for achievement and hard work, but this is not the stuff of remarkable leaders.

If Obama ever does experience genuine adversity, maybe we will have an important clue about what kind of leader he could be. What we have seen of Obama so far is that he doesn’t handle even semi-tough interview questions well.

I don’t see a glass jaw, per se. I think that once you don’t care about having a fatal disqualification for the presidency, you have literally become treacherous. You see obvious questions as punches that you know can hurt you. But you are indifferent to the substance of those questions. You need to brush them off.

Obama is a talker. That’s his speciality. If you came right up to his face with evidence that he had been caught shoplifting and pulled a set of wrenches he’d just lifted out from under his coat, he’d start up right away with how he was carrying them there and forgot to show them to the cashier.

After all, it’s always plausible that you just forgot about the wrenches, or that you didn’t hear, or even hear about, your spiritual advisor calling on God to damn America. Talk can get you out of it. When pressed, just say "I reject those comments," and compare those words from the pulpit of your church to some vague private comments your grandmother made to you. See, you’ve heard all kinds of stuff. "It’s all just talk" comes the ultimate irony.

This whole Obama campaign has been a con, right from the beginning, and I don’t mean that in the ordinary sense that every political campaign involves some level of con jobbing. I think that this is the result of now decades of moral dissolution in the Democratic Party. Walter Mondale was the last wholly formed person who they ran for the presidency. With Dukakis they tried a convenience store clerk. With Clinton came the first total con. Gore was something else again, but preeminently someone who had been debauched by the Clintons. Kerry was someone trying to run as a war hero who had actually betrayed his brothers in the field. Hillary is the original total con, redux.

But with Obama you have the "racial reconciliation" con, a con run on the deepest wound in the American soul, and run by someone who openly belongs to a church that teaches a racist "theology." Talk about hidden in plain sight. Talk about "who are you gonna believe, me or your lyin’ eyes."

Now, I don’t see Obama’s balls being that big, so you have to look at the whole operation and wonder what kind of crew tries to pull off something like that.

I suspect that there is some sort of brains trust behind Obama who saw this wonderful run straight up the middle using the race card as blockers.
