FYI, I didn't include this to argue about burning the flag. If you pay for it you can do anything you want with the flag.

I don't have to agree or like it, but it is your right and one I'll defend.

Of course, if you try to burn it on someone else's property, they or their representative have an equal right to stop it (for any number of reasons, all implicit in the rights of property). I just think of Rick Monday as the representative of the property owner in this case.

That brought some tears to my eyes.

When I served in a small (1 Avn Bn + 1 Maint Co) post in Korea, raising and lowering the post flag was just a twice-daily Staff Duty runner and Assistant CQ duty, but I count the duty as one of the important honors from my time as a soldier.

I also remember one day waiting to board the bus to Yongsan after work, I dropped my salute after "To The Colors" (which you normally can do if not within direct sight of the flag) but a second before the flag was fully lowered. The Bn SGM, who was also waiting for the bus and normally a kind grandfatherly sort, pulled out his inner Drill Sergeant to succinctly remind me why and how soldiers properly respect the flag.

Yes, I agree that the act of burning the flag in protest should be Constitutionally protected. But it’s a difficult, painful agreement and I feel relieved and grateful whenever a private citizen, like Rick Monday, exercises his right to disagree with that act.

Shark, I don’t know whether their names were ever released. If the fates are kind, they have lived lives of utter oblivion since then, while Rick Monday was and is regarded as a hero for stopping their display.

As for the protesters, they were identified as 37 year-old William Errol Thomas and his 11 year-old son. Thomas was arrested for trespassing and given three days in jail and a year of probation.
