Talk about what strikes your fancy.

I'm off to an army reunion. Going to see how much fatter, balder, grayer, older and uglier we've all become. I predict significant progress in all categories.

This is a rather obtuse way to talk around the "appeasement" issue ..
What Hitler was demanding at Munich was not unreasonable as a national claim (though he was making it in a last-minute, unreasonable way.) Germany’s claim was that the areas of Europe that spoke German and thought of themselves as German be under German authority. In September 1938 the principal remaining area was the Sudetenland.
.. and allow use to give our unending loyalty to the Queen.

.. or it it the other way around ?

Hmmm, I wonder if that same line of thinking could be used to make claims to the American southwest? You know, Spanish speaking people under the authority of Spanish speaking countries?
Might sound reasonable to some. Doesn’t sound to out of bounds to me.

Additional thoughts on the post "No Sympathy here..." If this is true
Matthis Chiroux is the kind of young American US military recruiters love. "I was from a poor, white family from the south, and I did badly in school," the now 24-year-old told AFP.
that Chiroux was exploited by the military how will he feel in six years about the recruiters of the groups mentioned in Linda Morgan’s comment.
The congressional hearing that Chiroux’s announcement capped off was an "unofficial hearing hosted by the 72-member Congressional Progressive Caucus." Testimony was provided by members of the Iraq Veterans Against the War. Swell.
I believe the Army and it’s recruiters would have suppoeted Chiroux for years. I believe the groups Linda mentions will discard Chiroux as soon as he serves their purposes. So just who are the exploiters.?

Frankly, I’m more than a little surprised that there hasn’t been more pro and especially con about Bush’s move to help the Saudis go nuclear.

From a foreign policy chess standpoint, it easy to understand but I really would have expected the usual suspects to be doing the usual screaming and yelling and gnashing of teeth over anything nuclear.

It sounds more like the audience at a Huckabee comedy gig.

Given some of the previous discussion of our ERB-4 experiment here at QandO, I thought readers here might be interested in similar research being carried out at Carnegie-Mellon.

Our research is clearly ahead of theirs, since they are still in the statistics gathering phase.

Thanks once again to QandO commenters for participating in our testing of the Emotionless Robotic Bloviator (ERB) program. We hope you didn’t find the generally low quality of ERB-4’s output to be too distressing. We hope to do better with future versions.

I suspect because the Left would like to see Iran with nuclear weapons, it will take time to formulate a script that wouldn’t seem hypocritical to want to deny them to SA.

In his 2002 letter to the United States, bin Laden has a lot of grievances, from America’s refusal to implement Sharia law to Jew-controlled usury to the lack of punishment for "President Clinton’s immoral acts." Like Barack Obama’s pastor, bin Laden shares the view that AIDS is a "Satanic American invention." Obviously, there are items on the agenda that the free world can never concede on – "President Clinton’s immoral acts" – but who’s to say most of the rest isn’t worth chewing over?

Much as I dispise the man, I do hope he recovers completely... A stroke (as some think he had) is a hell of a thing...

I certainly will him ill political will, but at times like this, he is just a father and a grandfather. A stroke took my grandmother - I do not wish that upon anyone.

Related, and cynically so, from where will the initial meme about all rethugs are evil cuz of one or two inappropriate comments. My guess, DU; but I have not waded in that cesspool for quite a while.

A series of strokes toom my great-grandfather, we had a scare of a Stroke with my grandma (his daughter, though it turns out it was only a fainting spell from a REALLY nasty flu), and my "grandma" on dad’s side "Great aunt, raised him, long story) had one a few years ago, and her speech is still affected...

So yeah, I wish him a full and speedy recovery if a Stroke is what this was.

Heck, whatever it was, I hope he has a full recovery. He’s a human being, and deserves a healthy life.

And DU? Dunno if I know that place...

An open thread?

Okay, how about some punchlines for the fact that The NAACP chose 35-year-old activist and former news executive Ben Jealous as its president Saturday...?

Yes, really, his name is Ben Jealous.

If this is true [...] that Chiroux was exploited by the military...
A couple of things make Chiroux’s claims ring false. First, NewsBusters has Bill Carr, Deputy Under Secretary for Military Personnel Policy, rebutting Chiroux (who told the AFP that, being poor, white and stupid, he was "filet mignon" for recruiters):
The writer’s assertion [that recruiters "love" bad students from poor families] is more journalistic myth. It’s callous and it’s false.

Today, as in years past, only the poorest quintile of families is under-represented among military recruits. Children of top quintile earners are represented in exactly their proportionate share, with middle-class earners over-represented to offset the short contribution of lowest-earning families.

Moreover, over 90 percent come to the military with a traditional high school diploma—something achieved only by about 75 percent of American youth. Two-thirds are drawn from the top-half of American in math/verbal aptitude.
It doesn’t sound like recruiters have been breaking their necks to sign up the poor slobs who can’t pass remedial reading. It does, however, sound as though Chiroux, poor and white though he may have been, wasn’t quite the high school dope he would like us now to believe:
Matthis Chiroux had it all planned out after he graduated from Auburn High School in 2002.

First, he would join the U.S. Army. Then, he would use his G.I. Bill benefits to enroll in college to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. After college, Matthis planned to become a public defender and dabble in politics.

And the 24-year-old Army sergeant’s dream was on track when he was honorably discharged last September. He wasted no time moving to New York City to attend college as a journalism and pre-law major.
Back to tom scott’s comment:
I believe the Army and it’s recruiters would have suppoeted Chiroux for years. I believe the groups Linda mentions will discard Chiroux as soon as he serves their purposes. So just who are the exploiters.?
I couldn’t agree with you more about what Chiroux might expect from the IVAW and the progressive congress-critters. But in view of his eagerness to grab that college money (and this chance to "dabble in politics") but to shirk his obligations, it looks like Chiroux’s right up there with the best of them when it comes to exploitation.

Ahhhhh... So this is that IRR guy that Badger 6 posted about a while back? never made the connection.

The contempt I have for this guy is epic in scale.

Since I’m about equal parts Conservative and Libertarian (Conservatarian), Allow me to answer this...

We can’t stand it. He’s the Party’s canidate, not mine.

If I vote for him come Election Day, it will be because I’m too drunk to feel the shame...

I’ll leave the punchlines to those with wit (and courage), but I have to say that the surreality of this situation increases by orders of magnitude when you look at the guy’s picture and think, as I did, "What? That white guy?"

Allow me to quote Steve Martin:
I would like to apologize to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, for referring to its members as "colored people." My apology would not be complete if it didn’t include my new wife, Nancy, who is of a pinkish tint, and our two children, who are white-colored.

It would seem that the only real fiscal conservatism in politics is the enactment of laws prohibiting the candidates from supplying free booze anymore. I predict that service at the establishment you frequent will be slow due to the large crowd. I am going to confirm that my local has an adequate inventory. I must brace myself to vote before I start drinking, lest I neglect that odious chore.

Global warming isn’t to blame for the recent jump in hurricanes in the Atlantic, concludes a study by a prominent federal scientist whose position has shifted on the subject.

Not only that, warmer temperatures will actually reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic and those making landfall, research meteorologist Tom Knutson reported in a study released Sunday.

...

The study, published online Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience, predicts that by the end of the century the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic will fall by 18 percent.
