Diversity Isn’t Rocket Science, Is It?

I find the Times conclusion to be at odds with the reality that I see every day. The cross section of most engineering companies look just like engineering grad schools. Maybe they should look there for the answer.

I can say that the engineering fields are about as neutral as any industry out there and probably even more so.

This is an industry that is today dominated by Chinese and Indians not because they planned it that way, but because these fields only demand that you bring your brain and they responded accordingly.

I have seen companies, in the worst form of affirmative action, hire any woman that can spell the technical words correctly because they fear being called sexist or worse. I have also seen woman excel to positions on an equal footing with the men around them, based on the same sort of hard work that was demanded of their colleagues.

The numbers may look bad, but as I have said to my daughter who has taken up the challenge, just bring your brain and the rest will be easy.

On the other hand .. lazy brains need not apply.

By the way, graduating engineering students (BS-level) are starting now at $50,000 and above this year. I’ve heard of a few above $100,000 in selected fields.

Not too bad starting in the top 10% of wage earners.

Bring your brain

So nothing new.

People on the Times editorial board and their fellow travelers only see the world through the lens of what they feel it should be, not what it really is.

Personally, I think that women "de-select" themselves out of engineering based on the idea that getting a college degree allows you to get a "clean" job.

The idea of going through college and then having to go out to probe an oil hole, take readings on a chemical plant distillation tower or check concrete thickness & hardness at a bridge job site just does appeal to them. Then, of course, there are those other reasons.

These and a hundred other things about engineering. There is no conspiracy to keep women out of engineering or the hard sciences. You see the same thing in software development - a field that is about as merit based as it gets and one that is perpetually short of talent. Women are not as interested.

Beets suck.

You mean the one’s designed to meet CA regulations?

The requirements flowed from CA politicians. You can blame them.

DoD contractors have to show considerable "diversity" in hiring. Women (and minorities) are actually at a significant advantage due to this.

Aside from that, science suggests that male and female abilities in engineering is likely different.

Anybody seen Rove’s latest electoral maps. It’s based upon public opinion polls, but it does show Clinton essentially winning the presidency, while McCain has a slight edge on Obama. Any thoughts?

One day Snow White was cleaning when there was a rumbling and she realized there had been a cave in at the mine.

Worried sick about the seven dwarves she headed out to see if she could help in the rescue effort. When she got to the mine there was a small group working to try and unblock the mine. Soon everyone stopped in the hopes they could hear something that would indicate if there were survivors.

It was faint at first but then finally they could make it out:
"Vote for Barrak, Vote for Barrak"

Snow White’s face lit up in a smile as she declared
"At least Dopey’s OK"

On a more serious note has anyone considered the wife comments in relation to Hillary today?

Specifically Obama comes out to "defend" his wife - so does this mean that he thinks women need a strong man to defend them? Perhaps he just wants to play on that underlying image that most americans have as he continues to battle Hillary - you know to just illustrate and remind people of that inherent weakness that he as a man can overcome by defending women...

I’m surprised the women aren’t offended by him cutting of his wife and not allowing her to defend herself.
