Back story on Obama rally
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, May 21, 2008

You remember the breathless reporting of the Portland Obama rally when 75,000 people showed up, to see him?

Well, it may not just have been him they came to see:
Here's how the local paper The Oregonian, which estimated the crowd at 72,000, reported the rally:

"Obama was the biggest star at Sunday's gathering — though a popular Portland band, The Decemberists, provided the warmup act. With blue skies and temperatures in the 80s, many in the crowd said Waterfront Park was simply the place to be."
The Decemberists is a hugely popular Portland indie band which usually starts their concerts off with their rendition of the Soviet national anthem. But hey, we have no idea whether they did so at the concert/rally because the national media somehow didn't think it important to report on the possibility that the band was as big a drawing card as the politician. It would have spoiled the moment, one supposes, if they had actually done their job.

Yes, what a missed opportunity for an enterprising young conservative blogger out of Oregon. What a splash a blogger could’ve made turning these wishes into horses.

How many people actually made the daunting voyage to a beautiful waterfront park on a Sunday to visit Obama exclusively? Or were some of them there to see an indie band play? Or perhaps to simply walk their dog?
I guess we’ll never know. Too bad.

One thing we do know, is that 75,000 people stuck around to hear Obama.

That we do know.

Cheers.

When the play the Soviet anthem, how many in the crowd stand up and remove their hats?

No, but the grils remove their tops.
Close enough.

Right Pogue, because on a beautiful day on the waterfront, everyone would purposefully leave just to avoid hearing a politician blather on.

The Decemberists are a great band.

Too bad that so many bands are political idiots, even as they are musical geniuses.

Do we? IIRC these numbers are usually event entrance numbers, starting from when the crowd began to gather. They do not indicate that there were 75,000 in attendance at any particular part of the event.

The Decemberists is a hugely popular Portland indie band for reasons which defy all human logic and understanding
Fixed that. Looks like you left something out... :)

I love the Decemberists! Colin Meloy is one of the best lyricists out there, and the band has a very unique sound. I especially love their cautionary tale type songs. I hadn’t ever heard about the Soviet anthem thing (although, I could have guessed from the name of the band), but their anthology is remarkably politics free.

Another reason to like them is that they introduced me to the Shins.

Yeah, it’s gotten to the point where I actively avoid finding anything out about the politics of my favorite artists. I am routinely disappointed when I do.

So....we ignore the fact that the opening act was a sounding rendition of the Soviet National Anthem? perhaps there was a huge hammer and sickle on display? Any other things that should be left out?

If McCain or Bush were to have had an opening from the Hitler Girls people would have called bloody murder.

Soviet anthem or Russian anthem or the Internationale? The music is the same, but the lyrics differ. I would suspect the Internationale, a socialist/communist/anarchist revolutionary tune written in 1888. The Decembrist revolt occured in 1825, when Marx was about 7 years old.

Maybe not. But it’s a big park, one doesn’t have to stand ear to ear with 75,000 other people to enjoy it. They stuck around to hear Obama… face it.
I mean… wouldn’t you? I know I would. It’s not everyday that a potential POTUS comes to town. Oregon isn’t Iowa.

The size of the crowd at least shows that there is an interest.

What’s so bad about that to have to cook up other explanations for the size of the crowd?

Yeah, it’s gotten to the point where I actively avoid finding anything out about the politics of my favorite artists. I am routinely disappointed when I do.
That’s good policy.
But even if one disagrees with an artist on political or social issues, one shouldn’t let that prevent one from enjoying the art. Although I know of some people that just can’t get the political stuff out of their head long enough to enjoy it. Whatever.

Cheers.

No one is cooking up anything ... the point made is there was an alternative explanation for the size of the crowd which went unreported by the media and left the impression that it was Obama alone who turned out a crowd that size.

Sure, they stuck around to hear Obama, but how many would have been there without the incentive of a free concert with a popular local indie band?

This is an obvious point and it reduces the impressiveness of the crowd numbers for Obama.

I’d be more impressed with that soup if it were Springsteen or the Stones or something.

Local, popular band draws 65,000 to free concert on a beautiful day in a gorgeous park. Yeah, no way that could have anything to do with the crowd size, huh?

I never said it didn’t. That’s your delusion. But if it were Springsteen, then your soup would boil. Obama typically draws big crowds, anyway.

Band, no band.

Again, no matter... they stayed.

De-lu-sion.
- a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact
IOW… You.

I never stated the band didn’t have any influence in crowd size. No doubt it did, that’s why they have music at these events one would assume.

All I stated that it was too bad that a McQ in the making didn’t go to the park and do some investigating. (Maybe there was, maybe they just didn’t report it. After all, they’re not pretending to be journalists, they don’t have to report anything they don’t want to. Shame, really.)
As far, there is no way to know the actual motivations of the many who attended. Some came for Obama, some came for music, and some probably just came to have a day at the park There just isn’t any way to know as of yet.
But the fact is, they stayed to watch Obama. Didn’t they???

Nvm, we know you won’t answer that. God forbid you mention anything that puts Obama in a good light.
Obama derangement syndrome is clearly taking hold of you. After the countless posts about Wright (I lost count around post #35), you and others like you that have great contempt for anything Dem Blue, then try to cook up some meme about how it was the band that they all came to see, not Obama. Then you say no one is cooking up anything. I call bullsh!t.

Now you might have a leg to stand on if you had any shavings of evidence to back you up, but you don’t. Do you?
Nvm, we know you won’t answer that.

Delusional –

Could it be that Oregonians almost never gets access to a potential POTUS, so they might be overwhelmingly curious?

McQ: No, it was the band.

Could it be that Obama typically draws big crowds almost everywhere he goes?

McQ: No, it was the band.

Could it be that there is a heightened interest in the first black candidate that has a realistic chance?

McQ: No, it was the band.

Delusional, that’s what you are.

C’mon, man. Snap out of it.

I never stated the band didn’t have any influence in crowd size.
And I said the media never reported the band’s presence or local influence thereby leaving a false impression that Obama drew the crowd all by himself.
Delusional, that’s what you are.
Heh ... hardly. On point, perhaps, but then that’s something you rarely achieve. And this is no exception.

No. All these political idiots have been right where I live multiple times in the past 2 years and I haven’t gone to hear any of them, ever. It’s a complete waste of my time; I already know what they say and it’s meaningless drivel.
