Without obsessing about the term "obsession" when it comes to McCain’s medical records, the larger point that there was probably some PR kung-fu going on in an effort to limit publicity regarding those records seems pretty plausible, if not downright obvious.
Releasing bad news on a Friday, or trying to piggy-back the timing of the release with other possibly distracting stories seem to be a part of Public Relations 101. Per the NYT article, that seems to be the admitted goal:Mr. McCain said late last week that he had nothing to hide. Campaign officials have nonetheless said that even if nothing in the records suggests a problem with his health, a rush of news media reports focusing on the cancer surgery was not politically helpful and that they wanted to play down the information as much as possible — something that the timing of the release would seem to accomplish. The simple fact that they played games with the release of the medical records... providing only a "small pool of reporters" access, with a limited 3 hour time frame, to pour over 400+ pages of documentation (which only cover the past 8 years, mind you) and with no ability to make copies, seems rather silly — unless, again, the express goal is to limit the amount of information transfer.
It’s the attempt to mitigate the publicity - and thus, the availability - of this information that is the thrust of the Media Matters article; a complaint which, again, seems legitimate.
