Religious tolerance - how it is supposed to work
Posted by: McQ on Thursday, May 29, 2008

From MEMRI:
Interviewer: "But Islam got rid of it, in order to remain all on its own."

Muhammad Abduh Al-Yamani: "It was not Islam that got rid of it. It was caused by the contamination that occurred in this religion. They changed, altered, and distorted their holy books, and Islam came to rectify this. Islam has not changed a thing in the teachings of Moses."

Interviewer: "So one of the basic principles of this dialogue is to accept that the [Jews and Christians] have a religion."

Muhammad Abduh Al-Yamani: "Yes, and we respect this religion, but we say to them: 'You've changed it, and you know that the books you have are not the divine gospel and the divine Torah. You have changed them. You yourselves admit that your books were written by priests and others who altered them. We want to bring you back to the original religion.'"
News Flash: No riots or demonstrations reported in Israel, Europe or the United States.

Apparently people secure in their own religion don't have to burn and destroy things when others make claims about their religion with which they disagree.

And boy would they get their turbans in a wad if we did...

’You’ve changed it, and you know that the books you have are not the divine gospel and the divine Torah. You have changed them.’
Funny, and someone (Big Mo) comes along hundreds, even thousands of years after the fact and announces this. I suspect the reason you don’t see riots is because these assertions are absurd and and are perceived as self-serving projection by most normal folks out there.

I don’t know. I passed a couple of nuns earlier today and the little old one just had that hellfire and brimestone look in her eye.

When they start splintering yardsticks over Saudi heads using nun-jitsu, then you should be concerned.

Where have you been for the past 1400 years McQ? Don’t you know that these views are written into the Koran, and are the central foundation of the Islamic religion? To disagree with Al-Yamani would be intolerant. You, my friend, are an Islamophobe.

Gotta love the simple and knowing way they make these proclamations...

Sorta like saying "you have changed the true teaching, you know the earth is flat".

There’s just no room for discussion or disagreement in their view.

Are they the ones behind the whole AGW? You know, ’no room for discussion’...

Well it could be that nobody in the West heard about the Saudi official talking on Saudi TV. Although the MEMRI target audience is people primed to be inflamed by Islamic rhetoric. Or it could be that "you have changed the true teaching" is pretty much the Protestant critique of Catholicism, and vice versa.

Well of course that’s the only example of anything like that ever occurring within Islam, huh Retief?

The point, of course, as exemplified in the "News Flash" is those sorts of things don’t create the reaction among Jews and Christians that the same sorts of statements (cartoons, rumors, whatever) do among members of Islam.

Rather telling that has to be explained to you.

As opposed to the people who just want to bury their heads in the sand and not know what the Islamists are saying.

Just for fun, if you want some high brow comedy, go here and click the random comic button. I literally laugh out loud when I read some of them.

Thank you, but no. Try next door - they’ll buy anything...

And meagain, today’s comic is plenty funny...

It’s part of being grown-ups.
