I’ve discussed this before, and you dense righties just don’t get it. "Negotiation" is a magic word. You just use it, and presto! Your enemies become reasonable and completely non-threatening.
Of course, to ensure that the magic works, there a ritual you must first carry out. You must admit to them all the sins of the US, and how we understand that they have grievances, and promise to do better in the future. You should also give in to whatever initial demands they make. Plus tell them how much in decline we are as a nation, and how smart Jimmy Carter is. Then they’ll be so happy and impressed by our supplication that they will be our friends forevermore and stop any icky sort of conflict they were considering. You’ll see. |

The Gordon Brown government is about to fall because of $8 a gallon gas, a shaky economy, and massive NHS corruption. What this moron’s comments do is confirm for the British people that "New Labour" is the same as the "New Democrats" in the United States - appeasers, one and all.

What do you suppose Orde has to "give"? What, other than a promise to stop the violence, at least until their next demand, will al Qaeda give? What "compromise" could they possibly reach that anyone would find reasonable?
Until Zawahiri & Bin Laden are neutralized, there will be people who listen to them calling themselves AQ. Z & B are not to be negotiated with - mostly because it’s not necessary - and they aren’t interested in any event.
However, once those guys are history, there’s a decent chance that the organization will devolve completely into local groups who are no more than rhetorically transnational.
We won’t have much to negotiate with these groups, because they’ll no longer be pointed at us, but at their own host countries or neighbors. We can encourage the neighbors to negotiate, or not, depending on our assessment on how much the local groups mellow.
These groups are unlikely to stop talking smack, but they may effectively cease to go after Americans. Which is, basically, mission accomplished. |

The logic error that people like Orde make is to assume that Islamists are driven by garden-variety political motives. Some terrorist organizations such as the IRA or the Basque separatists are essentially political in nature, so theoretically at least they could be appeased with political rewards. AQ, on the other hand, is essentially a religious cult, whose political goals are believed to be the will of Allah, and thus non-negotiable. |

What evidence do you base your assumption that there’s a ’decent chance’ that those who follow bin Laden and Zawahiri will be less radical and less bent on the same goals as those two and not more so? |

Can’t someone cut that crap out? Not without making it more difficult for real commenters. Even those "type in the numbers you see" things used by some other blogs don’t stop all the comment spammers, and those measures put up an obstacle every time someone wants to comment.
Those comment spammers are lower than squid excrement. They’re basically stealing server resources and bandwidth to push their shady products. And they never give up. Their comments get deleted by the hundred, and they just keep spewing more. Sometimes with software robots, sometimes with humans in third world countries paid to defeat anti-spam measures. The comments you referred to are gone, but they’ll be back with more. Sorry. |
