Fetal Surgery
Posted by: Bryan Pick on Monday, June 09, 2008

A slight change of pace from the political...

Over the weekend, you may have seen the story of the "baby who was born twice", Macie Hope McCartney. If you haven't, check it out and see what's possible today. The surgeons removed the uterus from the mother's body, and removed 80% of the child from the uterus, then put Macie and the uterus back inside her mother to wait 10 weeks to be "born again". It's a touching and awesome story, made possible by advances in technology and medical science.

Incidentally, the surgery was led by my ol' stepbrother, the talented Dr. Darrell Cass, at Texas Children's Hospital. He appears with the happy parents in the video. He was also featured in this similar story last year, about a surgery a couple of years ago, during which one of the surgeons held the tiny hand of the unborn boy.

Good work and godspeed, Darrell.

Dr. Cass and crew have done some amazing work there, in both stories. Both those kids were doomed never to see the light of day, and now they’re healthy with long decades ahead of them. Of course, the doctor says, it was "tricky."

It really is the age of miracle workers.

Beautiful story, and welcome reading in a time where negativity dominates the headlines. Thanks Bryan.
