AP says a 5-25 word excerpt is worth $12.50
Posted by: McQ on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

And I say, screw AP. That's not even close to fair use as I understand it. In fact, it's not even an attempt to address it.

As I've found in the past two days, there are plenty of other sources, so AP will get its wish - I won't be quoting AP nor will I be linking AP. They want to play games, I'll do the same. I wish them a slow and agonizing death as a relic of the dinosaur media.

Oh, and turnabout is fair play as Macsmind points out:
Fine, I’m no longer using AP cited stories any way. But I have found ten instances in the past where they excerpted my blog posts for one of their news stories. I have therefore prepared an invoice based on my scale of $100 per word which multiplied by the total words that were excerpted 63, which comes to $6,300.00.

I sent the invoice them today.

If payment is not received within 30 days according to my invoicing terms I will turn it over to a collection agency.
$10 bucks a word, a $100 bucks a word, Macsmind's rate is no more arbitrary than AP's. Bloggers need to put their own rate sheets up. Here's mine:
For AP - any excerpt from this blog - $1,000 a word.

For everyone else - free, and thank you for linking.

I’m border line on this myself, just now, though it won’t take me much.

I wonder if the Tu Quoque (SIC?) defense would apply here for any blogger that actually gets taken to court.

Isn’t charging different customers different rates a violation of the anti-competitive practices of the various federal anti-trust statutes? Careful there. :D
