What, Obama can’t just say "I think I need more money"?
Posted by: McQ on Friday, June 20, 2008

Wow. This, I think, falls under the heading of chutzpah - Obama's opting out of federal funding because of potential Republican 527 "smears"?

Give me a break.

Like I said below, I am fine with this because I'd love to see this public funding fiasco ended. But the excuse is, well, pretty lame:
In a web video emailed to supporters Thursday, Barack Obama explained that he was opting out of the public financing system because John McCain is “not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donations.”
In all honesty, I don't really blame Obama for changing his mind about public funding - in fact, I'm pretty happy with the fact that, according to the NY Times, his move may kill it.

Couldn't he just be honest about it and say, "hey, this is a 50 state campaign against a tough opponent and I don't believe the constraints of public financing will not allow me to raise the money I see as necessary to win."

Nope, straight to the bottom with a whine about something which, according to Jonathan Martin, doesn't even exist at this point:
The truth is that, less than five months before Election Day, there are no serious anti-Obama 527s in existence nor are there any immediate plans to create such a group.
More of that "new" politics I guess.

This is great! Obama just set the standard for himself- he himself now has to stop his own 527s from smearing McCain, lest he branded a hypocrite.

I look forward to him taking on MoveOn...

Obama did sell out the primary cause of his professional life, all for a tiny political advantage. If he’ll sell that out, what won’t he sell out?
Obama is now plain for anybody to see. He will say whatever it takes to get elected. And I do mean whatever.

More amusing about Barackaka’s whining about 527’s is that in 2004 of the top 10 527’s:
7 were Democrat (or anti-Republican) with @$238 million in receipts
3 were Republican (or anti-Democrat) with @$75 million in receipts
Of the next 10:
8 were Democrat with almost $54 million in receipts
2 were Republican with almost $11 million receipts

And in 2006
The top 10 527’s:
6 are Democrat with over $66 million in receipts
4 are Republican with over $22 million in receipts
Of the next 10:
8 are Democrat with @$18 million in receipts
2 are Republican @$6 million receipts
