Would Israel, like the USSR, just disappear?
Posted by: McQ on Friday, June 20, 2008

Matt Yglesais wonders:
I can't really tell what Kirchick is trying to get at here but it inspired Justin Logan to tell me something I didn't know namely that French television asked Ahmadenijad what he meant about how Israel should be wiped from the map, and he replied: "Why are you worried? Where is the Soviet Union? It has disappeared, has it not?"

Now I think it's actually clear enough why one might worry about this, and I have no objection to anyone worrying, but it really is different from threatening to kill all the inhabitants.
No, it's not really different at all.

Think about it - what would be different, for instance, between the USSR collapsing and the Israeli government collapsing?

Well, in the case of the USSR, no one rushed in to take over the country did they? The Russian people were left to sort out all of that among themselves.

Anyone - do you honestly believe the Palestinians, Hamas and Syria (backed by Iran) would do the same for Israel?

This is pure double-talk by Ahmadenijad and unsurprisingly it is finding uncritical purchase among the left here.

Ahmadenijad hates bush, what’s to wonder at? Do you think there is much thought beyond that? :)

"Well, in the case of the USSR, no one rushed in to take over the country did they? The Russian people were left to sort out all of that among themselves."

Well, they did not ... some of the "Russian people" decided they are not "Russian" and never were, and attempted to take out as big chunks as they were managed, claiming they were occupied etc., no matter that the borders they claimed were only the administrative borders set up by Stalin and his pals.

So you’ve got now a Ukraine or Belarus that are about half Russian, large Russian minorities in the Baltic states (that never existed as national states prior to their occupation by the Russians around 1700, and got their "national borders" during a similar land rush in 1918), invented national states in the South, "freedom fighters" in Chechnya that were not pleased with what they got and attempted to take on more complacent autonomous republics (such as Dagestan) ...
