Meanwhile, in the 7th Century ...
Posted by: McQ on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Things are toddling along pretty much unchanged:
Saudi marriage officiant Dr. Ahmad al-Mu’bi told Lebanese television viewers last week that it’s permissible for girls as young as 1 to marry — as long as sex is postponed.

Al-Mu’bi’s remarkable comments also included an explanation that “there is no minimal age for entering marriage.”

“You can have a marriage contract even with a 1-year-old girl, not to mention a girl of 9, 7 or 8,” he said. “But is the girl ready for sex or not?” What is the appropriate age for sex for the first time? This varies according to environment and tradition,” al-Mu’bi said.
Yeah, I mean my goodness, at least wait until she's 3 or 4!

And I'm supposed to be accepting of cultural differences such as this according to multi-cultural dogma. Can't judge, you know ....

I think your outrage has more do with arranged marriages than his actual words,

Technically, he’s right. I mean if I "marry" two babies and they didn’t meet until they were 18, it wouldn’t be much harm.

The Imam then goes on to be fairly reasonable and modern, saying the age of sex depends on the environment and tradition.

I don’t think arranged marriages are a good idea, but he might be working in a culture where its so rampant he has to consider it as a fact.

At least he’s clear about his intentions.
Dr. Ahmad Al-Mu’bi: What is the appropriate age for having sex for the first time? This varies according to environment and traditions.

The Prophet Muhammad is the model we follow. He took ’Aisha to be his wife when she was six, but he had sex with her only when she was nine.
Interviewer: When she was six...
Dr. Ahmad Al-Mu’bi: He married her at the age of six, and he consummated the marriage, by having sex with her for the first time, when she was nine. We consider the Prophet Muhammad to be our model.

"fairly reasonable and modern, saying the age of sex depends on the environment and tradition."

’Modern’ and ’tradition’ are not usually associated. ’Reasonable’ may or may not characterize traditions.

"but he had sex with her only when she was nine."

Obviously he had the patience of a saint. (heh).

" We consider the Prophet Muhammad to be our model"

So much for reasonable and modern tradition.

“a hallmark of liberal, secular societies is supposed to be respect for different cultures, including traditional, religious cultures — even intolerant ones.

-Harvard law professor and Times Magazine contributing writer Noah Feldman,
In other words, allowing 50 year old men to penetrate the vagina of a pre-pubescent, 9 year old girl with their penis is a hallmark of a liberal, secular society.

"In other words, allowing 50 year old men to penetrate..."

I guess that makes me illiberal, goshdarnit. Do you suppose this liberal toleration extends to traditional and/or religious American (particularly southron) cultures?

One would think that a Harvard law professor would know better than to make such overly simplistic generalizations.

I did not listen to the interview and only read the abstract at Fox. If he said 9 was fine because Mohammed did it, I completely retract my statement.

I should have realized what the word "tradition" means in the context of Islam. Shudder.

Seriously, if that’s what Muhammad really said and did, I don’t understand how anyone could follow him or his religion. Nine years old? I’d love to read a defense of that.
