Saudi marriage officiant Dr. Ahmad al-Mu’bi told Lebanese television viewers last week that it’s permissible for girls as young as 1 to marry — as long as sex is postponed.

Al-Mu’bi’s remarkable comments also included an explanation that “there is no minimal age for entering marriage.”

“You can have a marriage contract even with a 1-year-old girl, not to mention a girl of 9, 7 or 8,” he said. “But is the girl ready for sex or not?” What is the appropriate age for sex for the first time? This varies according to environment and tradition,” al-Mu’bi said.

Yeah, I mean my goodness, at least wait until she's 3 or 4!

And I'm supposed to be accepting of cultural differences such as this according to multi-cultural dogma. Can't judge, you know ....

I think your outrage has more do with arranged marriages than his actual words,

Technically, he’s right. I mean if I "marry" two babies and they didn’t meet until they were 18, it wouldn’t be much harm.

The Imam then goes on to be fairly reasonable and modern, saying the age of sex depends on the environment and tradition.

I don’t think arranged marriages are a good idea, but he might be working in a culture where its so rampant he has to consider it as a fact.

’Modern’ and ’tradition’ are not usually associated. ’Reasonable’ may or may not characterize traditions.

I did not listen to the interview and only read the abstract at Fox. If he said 9 was fine because Mohammed did it, I completely retract my statement.

I should have realized what the word "tradition" means in the context of Islam. Shudder.
